"Retro Puppet Master" Blu-Ray Review

When “Retro Puppet Master” was released on blu-ray, I was kind of surprised that this got a blu-ray release considering not many of the post paramount films have been hitting blu-ray. Also, this film was released before “Curse of the Puppet Master” on blu-ray. The film is the seventh film of the “Puppet Master” and most different from the others.

The film focuses on a young Andre Toulon (Greg Sestero) who is running his puppet shows with the help of his friends. During one of his shows, he meets the daughter of a Swiss diplomat whom he falls for. His life is turned upside down when a mysterious sorcerer on the run shows up on his doorstep with the ancient secrets of Sutekh. Now with the secrets, Toulon and his puppets must stop Sutekh and his servants before he carries out his evil plans.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen “Retro Puppet Master”. I remember first seeing this on DVD through the local video and feeling happy that it was better than the abysmal “Curse of the Puppet Master” where I was outraged at that film’s lazy attempt at making a horror film. This film holds up from the last time I saw it.

One of the reason that I enjoyed this was David Decoteau’s direction. He does a good job making sure this feels different from all the other Puppet Master films. Decoteau does that by making sure the dialogue scenes move at a good pace and not rely heavily on stock film like the sixth Puppet Master” did. It made this entry more enjoyable as it felt like a real film and something that would fit the crazy mythology. I also liked how the film’s villains also had a nice creepy look to them. Even though they feel practical and cheap, it has a nice zombie/ creepy “Dark City” vibe to them. Decoteau also did a good job making sure the acting is good here. I liked how he manages to make sure the performances have a different feel from previous films. It’s more low-key but effective as I was into them.

The screenplay written by Benjamin Carr was good. What I liked about this screenplay was that it had a different tone compared to the other films. The other films felt it had more of a horror tone to them with the way its focuses on the blood. This film however focuses more on the backstory of the series main character Andre Toulon and how he met his wife. It was a nice change of the pace from the first six films. The other thing that I liked about it was the fact that we got to the beginning years of Toulon and how he acquired the magic to make the puppet walk and kill. It gives more background information of the character. It’s nice to have a different kind of “Puppet Master” film considering the sixth one really sucked. The extras on the blu-ray starts off with the film’s commentary track featuring director David Decoteau and the film star Greg Setero. This was a very good one. I liked how the both of them do into detail about the making of the film and stories that had happened on set. It’s one of the better full moon commentaries that they’ve done. The disc then wraps up with the film’s original videozone and two hours of raw behind the scenes footage with or without commentary from David Decoteau.

This is seventh best film in the series as I have this just behind “Axis Termination”, but it’s still a good film. “Retro Puppet Master” is different from the other entry from the other films in the series but it was nice to have a different entry that focuses on Toulon and not the puppets so much.

Blu-Ray Review: "Creepozoids"

When I first discovered “Creepozoids”, I was looking into some Linnea Quigley work after liking her in films like “Night of the Demons” and “The Return of the Living Dead”. When I came across “Creepozoid”, I also noticed that it was David Decoteau who directed one of my favorite Full Moon films “Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge”. It was a no brainer to check this film out.

The film is about five people who deserted the army during a nuclear war. They come across an abandoned building to avoid the acid rain. They soon discover that they are not alone as there are mutant monsters lurking from every corner turning people into hideous creatures. Can they survive the storm before they become monsters themselves?

I enjoyed “Creepozoids” from start to finish. Decoteau’s direction was very good from start to finish. What makes his directing good was the way that he makes the action move at an intense pace. Whether it was the way that he makes sure the action has an intense feel to making sure this film has an energy to it, Decoteau makes sure the action is there to keep the film moving and keep you engaged with everything on screen. It helped made this a fun and intense film considering its budget. The other thing that makes his direction so good was the fact that the acting is good enough to keep you interested in the performances. He makes sure that his cast is making their performances good enough so that it makes you interested in the characters and the gory action that takes place. It helped with my enjoyment of the film, as it this was one of those fun 80’s B-movies.

The screenplay written by Decoteau and Buffalo Hauser was a fun one. One of the things that I liked about the screenplay was the fact that it builds up the suspense and terror. They made sure that they build up every intense scene. Whether it was through the false scares or making sure the creatures are terrifying, it was done in a way that it didn’t rushed. When that happens, it allows for good build up and development. The other thing I liked about this was the fact there was some good action sequences. The writers did a good job making sure that those scenes had an intense and gory feel to them. It gave that intense feel that I like seeing in low budget horror films where it makes you forget the cheap scenery.

If there was one thing that I didn’t like about this, it was the fact this film is short with its seventy-two minute running time. It was one of those films that I wished was a little longer because the running time flies by and like this film a lot. It’s the only complaint that I have with this film. The extras start off with the director’s commentary track from director David Decoteau. It’s a rarity for a Full Moon release to have one of these but it very welcomed here as there wasn’t any interviews on this disc. Decoteau does a good job going into the various facts about the production on this. It makes up for the lack of any interviews. After that, there’s rare production stills for the film and trailers for this film and other Full Moon releases. It was better than previous releases.

Creepozoids” was one of those films that I enjoyed a lot and made me want explore more of David Decoteau films as I would’ve never seen and enjoyed films like “Nightmare Sisters” and “Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama” which also starred Linnea Quigley. “Creepozoids” is a fun an intense 80’s B movie that will creep you out.

Review: "The Creeps"

It's been a while since I've done a blu-ray review here on the site. It also happens that I'm a big fan of Charles Band and Full Moon Features. So it was inevitable that I would check out “The Creeps” blu-ray and review it to see if it’s worth the conversion to blu-ray for you blu-ray lovers.

The film is about a mad scientist who brings to life the classic literary monsters Dracula, Frankenstein, the Werewolf and the Mummy. The only problem is they’re small sized people. Now in order to complete his insane plan to make them full figured, he seeks out to find a virgin to sacrifice so that his creations can be restored to full size. Can he be stopped before his classic monsters become full size to terrorize everyone?

I’ve seen a lot of Charles Band’s films over the years. Films like “Blood Dolls”, “Head of the Family and “Trophy Heads. “The Creeps” to me seems to come off as one of his weaker films that he’s done even though it isn’t Band’s fault due to the film’s weak script.

Director Charles Band does a good job directing this film. One of the things that he does well was to make sure the action keeps moving. He approaches the scenes in a way that it makes the action interesting even though he doesn’t have much of the screenplay with this film. The other thing that Band does well is to make sure the acting is good enough to keep your interest. That seems to be a trademark to Band’s films as he knows that the screenplays sometime tend to not be great. He’s able to cover that up with the performance aspect. It shows here especially with this film.

The screenplay by Benjamin Carr was bad. One of the things that I didn’t like about it was the fact there is no development whatsoever. I wished Carr could’ve took a little time to flesh out the main characters as everything seem to be moving so fast that it makes the story suffer. The other thing that I didn’t like about this was the fact nothing was scary. With monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Wolfman, I should’ve gotten a scary scene or two. Sadly, I didn’t get any of that here as it felt like it tries to go the humor route which was okay. Still, I was expecting more in this department. Thankfully, Band’s direction saves this film from becoming a complete mess.

David DeCoteau's Creepozoids Makes Blu-Ray Debut

Full Moon Features recently send us over information for the upcoming blu-ray of David DeCoueau's cult sci-fi horror film "Creepozoids". The cult film stars Kim McKamy aka adult film superstar Ashlyn Gere and Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead, Trophy Heads).

Special features on the blu-ray includes the original trailer and a vintage Videozone behind-the-scenes featurette.

Review: "Ravenwolf Towers": Episodes 2 & 3

Yours truly, decided to do something different for this latest “Ravenwolf Towers review. Since I had some spare time on my hands, I watched episodes 2 and 3 of the series back to back and decided to combine the episodes 2 and 3 into one review.

Episode 2 “Bonds of Blood” follows Jake as he is starting to form a romance with the beauty Mary. But unknown to him, she is an immortal matriarch and the source of the mysterious happenings in “Ravenwolf Towers”. He soon get helps from an investigator who is looking to the mysterious disappearance happening at the apartment complex.

“Episode 3 “Secret in the Wall” follows Jake and Ivan as they begin looking into the history of “Ravenwolf Towers. While they are investigating, one of its residents Dr. Locra has hired a private investigator to find out why and who hired Ivan to find out the reasons for the disappearances at the apartment complex. She quickly finds out some of the secrets that haunt this place.

Going into episode 2 “Bonds of Blood” and episode 3 “Secret in the Wall, I didn’t know what to expect after the surprise twist at the end of episode one. It didn’t have any surprising things happening here until the last episode but still these were two very good episodes.

Director Charles Band is very good here again with his direction he continues the job that he did with episode one. What I liked about with the way that he doesn’t get too crazy with the direction or action. Episode 2 and 3 as they both felt more gothic than the first episode as it focuses more on the characters than the happenings at the hotel. He manages to make sure the scenes strike a dark tone that it makes you feel you’re in this demented world. It made each of the episode move at a good pace. The other thing that I liked was the fact that there was more emphasis on the acting side episode 2 and more story on episode 3. Band does a great job making sure the performances are very good as both Shiloh Crevelling and Evan Henderson were very good in making their characters being the focus each of the two episodes as the performances are helping his series becoming very good to watch.

Roger Barton’s screenplay was also good here. I liked how he makes sure that he goes more into the two main characters of the series. It makes them interesting as I don’t what the endgame is for each of them. It’s one of the things that makes this show work very well. I also liked how he started to integrate past full moon characters into the story. It helps add to the oddness tone that this series is going for. The other major thing that the screenplay does well was the way the action is handled in both of the episodes. Barton does a good job making sure that isn’t much of that as he goes for more of the story aspect and the main plot line of the series. It allows for the main characters to be the forefront of the story instead of having some random gory kill scenes that take away the focus of the story. That’s what makes a chamber drama like this work so well and keeps coming back for more. It also helped that the last scene of episode three gets me excited for the future chapters of the series.

With three episodes down, this series is starting shape like this is going to be equally as good or better than Full Moon’s last series “Trophy Heads”. Ravenwolf Towers” is quickly becoming one those series that is can’t miss on TV or VOD as its dark and creep as hell.

Review: "Ravenwolf Towers": Episode 1 "Bad Mary"

Lately, yours truly has been reviewing films for both here and Film-Arcade.net. When I first heard the Full Moon Features was doing “Ravenwolf Towers” as another episodic series for their Full Moon Streaming site and DVD, I came about the idea of trying my hand at episode reviews. So each week for the next three weeks, we will be reviewing the first three episodes of “Ravenwolf Towers”.

The opening episode follows Jake, a person who has recently started as assistant manager at an apartment complex known as “Ravenwolf Tower”. The place features an assortment of unusual people including a mysterious doctor/collector, a vampire hunter, a clown and a family who has rented an entire floor. One day when Jake is fixing a leak in the hotel, he comes in contact with a mysterious beauty who he falls for instantly. Is she the girl of his dreams or will the girl will bring his demise?

After watching the end of the first episode of this series, it gave me that feeling that I want to see where this goes because I’m interested in the story. “Bad Mary” was a good start to “Ravenwolf Towers.

Director Charles Band does a very good job making sure that the first episode has some his trademark weirdness. Whether it was the look of the episode to how the action moves, everything is done so that it hooks you in. The other thing that he does well is to make sure the acting fits the film’s eerie tone. Band makes sure that he gets the performances he needs to make the characters interesting enough that it makes you want to tune into the next episode.

The episode written by Roger Barron does a good job setting up the character for this dark series. I liked how he doesn’t have too much action going on in the first episode. It allows for the introduction or re-introduction of the characters who are part of this series. It something that you want to hook you in like it did for me. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the fact that it’s dark and creepy. Whether it’s the situation the main character is in to some of the interiors, it comes off like a David Lynch film as you’re hooked into all the odd happening. It makes the atmosphere stand out which is something that’s needed for a series like this to work.

The first episode also does a good job making you want to continue this series by the way that it ends. Won’t tell you how it ends, but it was something that I didn’t expect and is going to make things interesting.

If this series is like the first episode, then I’m going to be for a fun time as I’m a fan of gothic and weird shows like “Dark Shadows”, “American Horror Story” and “Twin Peaks”. With its creepy tone and an ending that leaves you with questions, it makes me want to check back in to Ravenwolf Towers”.
