Retro Review: "See No Evil 2"

When I first heard about “See No Evil 2”, I thought it was dumbest idea in the world. But when WWE Studios tapped Jen and Sylvia Soska as the directors for this film, I was on board with it after liking their previous films “Dead Hooker in a Trunk” and “American Mary”. Also the casting announce announcements added to my interest in this film.

The film takes place just right after the events of “See No Evil”, where the body of Jacob Goodnight (Glen “Kane” Jacobs) has arrived at the city morgue. A group of friends surprises their friend Amy (Danielle Harris) with a party at the morgue after Amy decides to work late and help out. But their night of fun turns into a night of terror, when Jacob Goodnight reawakens and starts terrorizing everyone. Now they must find a way to survive and leave Jacob Goodnight goes on another sadistic rampage. The film also stars Katharine Isabelle (American Mary) and Michael Eklund (The Call).

One of the reasons that “See No Evil 2” is far better than the first one was the direction from Jen and Sylvia Soska. The twisted twins did a very good job making sure the film had an intense feel to it. From the film’s death scenes to how it was shot, everything felt creative and had a very dark feel to it. This helped me feel like I was watching a serious slasher film than a guilty pleasure film like the first one was. It made the film more enjoyable for me. The other thing that both Jen and Sylvia do very well was to makes the performance very good. I liked, the fact that both of them made that aspect didn’t feel cheesy or try and copy the first film. The direction helped made the scenes work well and it made the characters more interesting on screen.

Speaking of the performances, the lead performances were very good. Glen “Kane” Jacobs performance was much improved from the first film. He does a good job making sure that his character has a serious and menacing feel. It helped with some with some of the action as it comes off as horrifying. The film also has some good performances from Danielle Harris, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, and Katharine Isabelle, as the performances really added to this film.

The main thing that I was afraid of going into this film was the screenplay. The first film didn’t do much to win me over in this department, but it still worked in guilty pleasure way for me. Thankfully, it doesn’t go that route here as I liked it. The screenplay written by Bobby Lee Darby and Nathan Brookes did their job in providing something different from the first film. One of the things that I liked about it was that it had interesting characters and an intense feel to some of the scenes. From the way they develop their subplots to how they approach the action in the story, they did a good job making the story and tone of their screenplay different. It helped keep my interest in the story throughout. The other thing that I liked was the fact that they tried to take this screenplay seriously unlike the writers of the first film. In the first film, the screenplay was lacking a lot as it mostly felt like a collection of kill scenes with good direction. This film didn’t have that same feel as they made sure that the characters were developed enough to make them interesting. It helped the film be a little more serious than “See No Evil”.

This is a big improvement from the first “See No Evil” film. With its good direction from Jen and Sylvia Soska and a screenplay that is intense, “See No Evil 2” is one horrifying good time.

Jen & Sylvia Soska Set to Co-Write and Co-Star in "Puppet Killer"

 

Twisted Twins Productions recently send us over information that Jen & Sylvia Soska will be producing. co-writing and co-starring in their upcoming production "Pupper Killer". The film is slated to be directed by Lisa Ovies and starring Aleks Paunovic (Continuum, iZombie) and Richard Harmon (The 100, Bates Motel).

Production begins this week and no release date has been scheduled at this time.

Synopsis:

Years after the mysterious disappearance of his step mother, Jamie and his friends return to his family's cabin that holds a very dark secret for a Christmas getaway, but the holidays always have a way of letting these things out. Convinced that his childhood puppet is a magically animated killer, will Jamie be able to save his friends from a blood body count or is he the one who is actually crazy?

Our Story:

No stranger to the film community, former student of Chicago Second City Lisa Ovies is an award winning producer, writer, director, and actress with over 12 years of experience in the business. Commencing shooting this winter, PUPPET KILLER marks her feature film directorial debut. The story itself is a macabre satire about the co-relation between violence in film and television and violence in reality. Lisa is an avid lover of film and horror and this project has been years in the making for her.

"It has been almost two years since I came up with this idea and I can't explain the joy I feel watching it come to life. I created my production company because I was tired of waiting around hoping for opportunities and ready to start kicking down doors. 5 years later I am making my dream film with the strongest cast I have ever been honoured to work with," says Lisa.

Joining the cast are sci-fi fan favorites Aleks Paunovic (Continuum, iZombie) and Richard Harmon (The 100, Bates Motel).

PUPPET KILLER will also partner director Lisa Ovies with industry titans, Jen and Sylvia Soska, the Soska Sisters (American Mary, Hellevator), who are coming on to not only produce, but will be at long last returning in front of the camera to act in the film. Ten years ago the Twins started off their own filmmaking directorial debut with Dead Hooker In A Trunk which also shot in Vancouver in the winter. Now years later and with numerous projects under their belts, they're the ones who are happy to be throwing their support behind another strong, emerging female voice.

"We see a lot of people talking about the severe gender misrepresentation behind the camera in the film world, but we don't often see people doing something to change that. Ten years ago we took our first steps with our debut feature film and diversity representation remains a struggle in the industry. I believe in Lisa Ovies, I love her project, I want to see it made, and I am going to be a part of making that happen. I'm not just going to talk about diversity, I'm going to do something about it," says Sylvia, President of Twisted Twins Productions.

"Over the years I have built an amazing family of both cast and crew that I consistently work with and to include the twins in that has been inspiring and empowering," adds Lisa. "Women love horror, women love Sci Fi and comic books. We aren't not directing them because we don't want to, we aren't directing them because we aren't being invited to. I adore the attitude that me and the Soska's share; we are in charge of our careers and our content and we are making this film our way.... and our way is covered in blood, refusing to sacrifice content and quality. This film is 100% ours and you will see that on the screen."

PUPPET KILLER is written by Kevin Mosley (Suspension) and the Soska Sisters. There will be more surprises for horror fans revealed about the film so be sure to stay tuned. Filming begins in Vancouver this Friday.

The Soska's Sisters Graphic Novel "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack" Is Fully Funded

Twisted Twins Productions recently send the horror chamber information that their graphic novel "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack" is fully funded on Kickstarter. Now, they are looking to unlock stretch goals, as they would like to add the short story "Rage Thong" as part of the graphic novel. The only way this can happen is if they reach 100,000 by the end of their campaign.

The Soska Sisters Set to Take the World of Graphic Novels by Storm with "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack!"

Anthony T's Horror Chamber is more than horror films as we look for everything that relates to horror.

Case in point, we recently received a press release and three pages from Twisted Twins Productions for their new graphic novel project "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack". The project is has currently raised $24,800. They're looking to raise at least $30,000 by May 8th for the project to be fully funded. They also have more incentive goals that they want to reach before its deadline.

Here's our story!

Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack! is an original graphic novel presented in a grindhouse/exploitation film style. It’s irreverent and raw but, at the same time, it’s a story–an actual story with a beginning, middle and end–that’s infused with relevant social commentary.

The story centers upon Purvis Gunt, a malcontent and pervert who works at a pharmaceutical lab. Purvis is obsessed with having rampant, porno-style sex with nearly every woman he sees but it’s never gonna happen for him because, in addition to the fact that he’s married, he’s revolting in every possible way. So he turns to science for a way to cheat the situation, using the resources of the pharmaceutical lab to create something that will cause women to lose any and all inhibition or restraint and fill them with uncontrollable lust. Purvis, however, is a terrible scientist. What he cooks up is a virus that fills women with not only a lust for sex…but for blood!

When the virus gets out and infects the female population of the small town where Purvis lives, carnage ensues and it’s up to Purvis, disgraced priest Father Osorio and super macho but sexually ambiguous SWAT officer Mack Diesel to contain the situation before woman-hating US President Pole drops a nuke on the whole goddamn mess!

AND keeping in the vein of our proud tradition of appearing in our own films, the Twisted Twins will be appearing as the "Sister Sisters" in the graphic novel, timid twin nuns turned maniacal, knife wielding man eaters. ATTACHED, HERE'S YOUR FIRST LOOK AT THE BOOK.

"The ABC's of Death 2" Review

“The ABC’s of Death 2” is a film that I’ve been waiting to get a chance to see since first hearing about it. I enjoyed the first film, even though I couldn’t stand some of its segments. But I was excited about this entry considering the talent that are involved with the project.

The film consists of 26 chapters that represent each letter of the alphabet. It features some of the best up and coming talents including Julian Barratt (A Field in England), Todd Rohal (The Catechism Cataclysm), Steven Kostanski (Manborg), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Jim Hosking (commercial director), Hajime Ohata (Henge), Chris Nash (Skinfections), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), Bill Plympton (Animator), Erik Matti (On the Job), Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (Vanishing Waves), Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter), Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary), Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves), Julian Gilbey (A Lonely Place To Die), Dennison Ramalho (Ninjas), Lancelot Imasuen (Nollywood director), Jerome Sable (Stagefright), Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah), Robert Boocheck (Horrific), Juan Martinez Moreno (Game of Werewolves), Marvin Kren (Rammbock:Berlin Undead)and Soichi Umezawa (special makeup effects artist).

Before I start on what I liked and disliked about “The ABC’s of Death 2”, I think this is much better film than “The ABC’s of Death”. It didn’t feel like there too many awful ones here. There were a couple of bad one which I’ll get to but at least most of the films were good or so-so. This made it a little harder coming up with some of the best shorts here. Still, that it’s a good problem to have especially when there wasn’t many bad/awful ones. Let me start off with the ones I liked.

Speaking of starting off, this film starts off with one of best ones in the whole film. “A for Amateur” directed by E. L. Katz. Like his earlier film this year “Cheap Tricks”, this was one twisted film. I liked, the way that he does a great job starting the short like a music video with the way it was directed and conceived. It made me think that the whole short was going to be that way. But I was wrong, as this quickly turns into one of the most gruesome and shocking shorts of the bunch.

The next one that I truly liked and stood out for me was “K for Knell” directed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper, the duo behind the Lithuania film “Vanishing Waves”. This was an intense short from start to finish. What I liked about it was the fact they manage to make everything intense without any dialogue being spoken. The way they directed their actress helped this short work as a whole without needing other characters to make the action scary, as her reactions helped build the suspense. It also provided a good scare or two which helped set it apart from some of the other shorts. The other one that stood out was “W for Wish” by Steven Kostanski. This short had the same feel as Kostanski’s last film “Manborg”. He makes sure that his short had a different approach from its fanboy feel to the way that he uses stop motion effects. It made the short have its apocalyptic tone while also having its cheesy feel to it. It made the short both entertaining and twisted.

Other good ones include the Claymation short “D for Deloused”, the weird “G is for Granddad”, Erik Matti’s (On the Job) dysfunctional family short “I is for Invincible”, Marvin Kren’s (Rammbock: Berlin Undead) “R is for Roulette”, the entertaining Q is for Questionnaire directed by Rodney Ascher (Room 237)” Jen and Sylvia Soska’s (See No Evil 2) creepy “T is Torture Porn” featuring Tristen Risk (American Mary) and Conor Sweeney (Father’s Day, Manborg) and the shocking “X is for Xylophone” directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury(Vivid, Inside) and starring Beatrice Dalle (Inside).

There were a couple of really bad ones too. For the life of me, why in the world the two of the worst shorts of are L and M again. They weren’t as horrifically bad as the L and M in the first film but I would’ve thought those letters would be the easiest shorts to watch. “L for Legacy” was one of those shorts that should’ve aired on Syfy and not this film. Everything was wrong from the story feeling rushed to the effects, it had a cheesy and dull feel to it. “M for Masticate” is the other one that really sucked. It was directed by Robert Boocheck, who won the 26th director contest for this entry. What made this short not work for me was the way that he uses slow motion. That technique made the short nauseating to watch, as I was disgusted with what I was watching. It also didn’t help that the ending was the beginning of the short.

Beside those two, the other awful short that stood out in a negative way was “E for Equilibrium directed by Alejandro Brugues (Juan of the Dead). This was the worst of the bunch. This short had characters that come off as stupid and uninteresting. Also, it would’ve been nice to have seen interaction with the characters. While some of shorts didn’t have dialogue or much interaction, they managed to build tension and suspense in their shorts. This film has none of that, as it’s not suspenseful and entertaining enough to grab my interest.

Even though I liked “The ABC’s of Death”, this film is much better than the last one. With some very entertaining shorts and more of an intense feel. “The ABC’s of Death 2” shocking horror at its best. I can’t wait to see a third installment of this series.
