"Trapped in the Muck" - An Interview with Actress Puja Mohindra

Puja Mohindra is a writer/producer/director/actress who has made guest appearances on TV shows such as “All My Children”, “Ghost Whispers” and “Chicago Fire”. Today, she is here to discuss her latest film “Muck” which recently hit DVD and Blu-Ray last month.

1.Thank you for taking time for this interview. Before I get into “Muck”, tell my readers how you got into acting?

You're welcome. Thanks for sharing my story. I got into acting through dance. I studied and performed an Indian classical dance theater style called Bharata Natyam throughout my chlldhood and into my adolescence. I also was on the speech team in high school, where I competed in Comedic and Dramatic Duet Acting. Honestly, I wanted to play basketball or tennis in high school, but I wasn't good enough to make the team! So, theater, dance, and creative writing became my after-school activities that turned into my greatest passions. Happy accidents!

2. Were you a horror fan when growing up? If so, what were some of your favorite horror films?

Actually, I'm too much of a scaredy-cat for horror films! My favorite films are comedies, romances, and character-driven stories. I love historical, period pieces, as well.

3. I enjoyed “Muck for some of intense action scenes. How did you become involved with this film and tell me about your character in the film?

I auditioned for the film in a standard audition process. I do remember the director asking me if I would be willing to wade through a swamp at night in the dark and cold--so I was given fair warning about that!

My character is the lead character's love interest. She's from India, originally. She's fiesty, strong, funny, and innocent.

4. What was the like filming in Cape Cod, MA compared to other places?

We shoot mainly at night in Cape Code in September, so while it was beautiful, it was cold! Cape Cod has so much history and beauty. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to explore it and share its gorgeous landscape in this film.

My other projects have been shot in big cities like Chicago and Los Angeles, where you're always up against city and street noise. It can sometimes interrupt the shoot and spoil good takes. Cape Cod was so peaceful, and we shot at night, so we didn't face these challenges with noise and sound, or at least not as much. It allowed us to be more productive and efficient with our time.

5. The action scenes were very intense. What was the filmmaking process like and filming some of the intense and gory scenes involving you?

I did a few stunts on my own. We had a fantastic Stunt Coordinator who made sure we were always safe and comfortable, as did Steve Wolsh, our director.

As for the gory scenes, I had to get comfortable with having blood thrown on my face, which is a lot like having a pie thrown in your face!

6. “Muck” marks the first film for director Steve Wolsh. What was it like working for him and would you work with him again?

I really enjoyed working with Steve. He's ambitious and extremely detail-oriented with a strong and specific vision. From the first time I read his script, I loved that he created an Indian character who is part of the ensemble, but her story isn't driven by her ethnicity. She's just one of the group of friends who experience these events-- a night gone horribly wrong--and her ethnicity has little to do with the story. I think that's really innovative of him and a much more accurate portrayal of our world, at least in America.

7. I thought the cast was very good in this film including yourself, what was it like working with your co-stars and were there any fun stories from the set?

The rest of the cast was fantastic. We spent two weeks together in Cape Cod, and we had a great time both on set and off. On set, my favorite memories were shooting a scene where we driving a stolen police car, and when we were shooting, the car kept breaking down. It was funny, but also a great example of movie magic. You can't tell in the finished film that the car had any problems.

"Nightlight" Set to Bring Nightmares to Your Own Home on DVD

Lionsgate Home Entertainment recently released information for the upcoming DVD Release of "Nightlight". The film stars  Shelby Young (The Social Network, Wild Child), Chloe Bridges (Family Weekend, TV’s “The Carrie Diaries”) and Carter Jenkins (Valentine’s Day, TV’s “The Following”).

Special features on the DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and an alternate ending with optional commentary. A feature-length audio commentary with the writers/directors and producer.

Film Review: Afterimages

Horror Anthologies used to feel special. With films like “Tales from the Darkside: The Movie” and “Trick r Treat”, it had a special feel to it. These days, the horror subgenre doesn’t have that special feel it once did. In last year, I’ve watched seven of these including “The ABC’s of Death 2” and V/H/S Viral” most recently. This leads me to my review of another horror anthology film “Afterimages”. Yes, it’s another horror anthology, but the only difference is that this film is written and directed by one director (Tony Kern).

The film is a collection of five films (Ghost Pool Leg, Xiao Bao Bao, Skin Deep, Rekindling and Burnt Offerings) that centers on a group of student. They find out when they burn a camera for the dead, a mysterious film comes from the ashes containing something horrifying. But what they don’t know is the more they continue to do it, the more dangerous it become for them as you don’t mess with the dead.

It’s amazing that I don’t get tired of these horror anthologies even though I was starting to get fatigued of watching these films. I still wanted to see this one after seeing the film’s trailer and seeing the nice poster art for this film. I was surprised that I wasn’t that tired of watching this horror subgenre after seeing “Afterimages”, as this is one terrorizing film.

Most of that has to do with the film’s writer/director Tony Kern. His direction was very good. One of the things that I liked about it, he does a very good job making sure each of the shorts had a different feel and tone to it. Whether it’s the way that he approached it in his screenplay to how he makes each of the short look on screen, everything had a dark and frightening tone to it. This is what made this film very good from the first story to the end of the wrap around segment. The other thing that he does well is directing his cast. Kern does a very good job making sure the acting is good enough to make some of the film’s scary scenes feel frightening. This really helped me enjoy this film, as I was interested in what was happening and it provided scares.

All of the five stories in the film was good as I have nothing bad to say about these. There were two that stands out from the rest. The first one that stands out was “Skin Deep” What made this short good was the fact that the cast in the short had chemistry and the story worked. It helped build the tension that was needed to make this work. Considering the whole short takes place in an elevator, it’s something that has to happen for it to be good and intense. Thankfully, it was as this was a very good short that made me wished this was a standalone film. The other one that I liked a lot was the film after that “Rekindling”. Tony Kern does a very good job with the way that he directs this short. From the movement of the ghost to how the main character is developed, it provided some very good scares and it kept my interest through. It was the most terrifying short out of the bunch.

“Afterimages” is one of the better entertaining horror anthologies that successfully keep you on the edge of your seat. With its entertaining stories and scares,” Afterimages” is a horror anthology film that will haunt you and make you think twice about messing with the dead.

Chilling Stills for Wild Eye Releasing's "Jonah Lives"

Film Review: "Bordello Death Tales"

Anthology films seem to be all the rage these days in the horror genre. There been a lot these films in the last five years. From known films such as V/H/S, “The ABC’s of Death to lesser known ones such as “Horror Independent 8” to “Faces of Scholck” to most recently “Afterimages”, which my review will be up next week. Add “Bordello Death House” to that list.

“Bordello Death Tales” brings together filmmakers Jim Eaves (“The Witches Hammer,” “Bane”), Pat Higgins (“KillerKiller,” “Hellbride,” “TrashHouse”) and Alan Ronald (“Jesus vs the Messiah”) bring you three killer tales, “Stitchgirl”, “The Ripper”, and “Vice Day” Each of them are told from the closed bedroom doors of the mysterious Madame Raven’s bordello. The first film in this anthology was “The Ripper”. This was the best of the three. One of thing that I liked about was the fact the film had a creepy feel though out. Director Jim Eves does a very good job making sure that his short looked good and having a gory feel to it. It helped make this interesting and entertaining. The screenplay for the short was also good. I liked how he does a good job making sure that he gives you an uneasy feel to the scenes. This helped gave the film its identity and separate it from the rest of the film.

The second film in this anthology was Alan Roland’s “Stichgirl”.This was the most surreal of the bunch but was also entertaining. One of things that I liked about it was the choice of Roland to use black and white for most of the short. It gave the film a gothic tone to it and the title character. But the best thing about this short was the way that Roland directs the film’s dream sequence in color. It had the special and surreal feel to it as this is the only time that you see the film’s main character in color. It made everything feel bizarre and entertaining at the same time.

The final short in this film is Pat Higgins’ “Vice Day”. This may have been the weakest of the film in terms of action but I thought it was good. The main reason for that was the fact that it focuses on the two main characters of the short. He does a good job developing them through the conversation that the characters had for most of this. If didn’t do that and rush the action, this would’ve been a short that I would’ve been complaining. Instead, I was interested in the characters and the story.

The only problem that I had was the fact that the film felt like it had no wrap around segment. It would’ve been nice to see a story to connect all these stories, but at least you have the bordello front and center for each of the stories to let you know that they connected to the bordello. So, they get a pass for this complaint.

“Bordello Death Tales” is worth checking out, if you’re into horror that is surreal and out of control horror.

Plot Synopsis:

None of them would have chosen to spend the night together in such an eerie place, but the last ferry for the mainland has just left, and a terrible storm is rolling in. As the night creeps on, however, it becomes clear that someone--or something--has arranged to get them in the house. It's not long before someone mentions that Spektor Island is supposed to be haunted. Of course, no one in the house believes in ghosts.

Award-Winning Local Film Released Worldwide via the Web

The independent feature film “CREEPER”, awarded Best Film at the 2014 Killer Valley Horror Film Festival, has just been released worldwide via the Internet for viewers to stream and download directly from the filmmakers.

“Among the lights and sounds of the city a predator roams night clubs and bars searching for victims for his sexually twisted fantasies. Even people with normal everyday jobs have their secrets that they hide from the rest of the world.”

The film is written & directed by Ron Huffstutter, graduate of Southern Oregon University’s film program. It is the first release from Tunnel 13 Films.

The movie stars Levi Anderson, Chloe Rosenthal, Kurk Kasparian, and Bloody F Mess.

The 50-minute film is aimed at a mature audience due to language, violence and brief nudity.

Shooting began in late 2013, and production was limited primarily to weekends due to the schedule of the cast and crew. Principal photography was completed in 2013 and post-production was finished just days before the entry deadline for the film’s first film festival submission in April of 2014.

In addition to taking home the “Best Film” award at the Killer Valley Horror Film Festival in 2014, the film also garnered “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” awards for Levi Anderson and Chloe Rosenthal at the same festival. “CREEPER” was also an Official Selection at the Drunken Zombie Film Festival before being released online.

Tunnel 13 Films, the production company behind “CREEPER”, is trying to build their audience from the ground up, by offering this film online for free to anyone that watches it on the Official Website, or viewers can pay $3 to download the full film and watch on any device from anywhere they choose. The company plans to release all their films this way, as well as offering them direct to download from digital distributors who specialize in independent films, such as IndieReign, VHX, and Fandor. All other distributors will have a download charge, but the filmmakers plan to always allow free viewing of all their films via the official Tunnel 13 website.

Film Review: "Motivational Growth"

When I first heard about “Motivation Growth”, it drew my interested almost immediately. It was because of the fact that it stars Jeffery Combs from “Re-Animator” and most recently “Would You Rather?” which he was great in. Still, I was a little skeptical about this film considering the film looked like it was going to be one of those weird films that I would love or hate.

The film is about a depressed and reclusive man (Adrian DiGiovanni) who spends his time taking advice from a talking mold (Jeffery Combs) in his bathroom. The mold tries to help him with his problems and change his livelihood. He meets a woman and finds that he’s happy again and enjoying life. Everything starts to turn around for him until he starts hearing messages from his television that the mold might have a hidden agenda. He becomes caught up in the middle of a battle between good and evil that he isn’t fully aware of and can’t find a way out of this mess.

I've seen and reviewed some weird horror films even since becoming so passionate with this genre. “Motivational Growth” is up there with films like “Street Trash” and “Slime City” as one of the weirdest films that I’ve seen. With that said, I still enjoyed this film.

The main reason for this film being very good was its directing. Writer/director Don Thacker does a very good job making sure that the flow of the film was very good. From the mold effects to how the gore elements were used, everything had a surreal tone to it. It also gives this film its odd and weird feel which is complemented with a score that fits the film perfectly and direction that makes the scenes on screen work. Thacher also does a very good job making sure that the performances fits it’s out of control tone. Whether it’s the way that he has cast deliver their lines to how they make their characters stand out, everything helped keep my interest even though I wasn’t sure what to make out of everything.

The acting here was very good. Both Adrian DiGiovanni and Jeffery Combs did a very good job with the way that they each handled their roles. They both made their characters entertaining and it felt like they chemistry with the back and forth chatter between their characters. It made their characters interesting even if they were doing this on screen or through ADR.

The screenplay written by Thacker was very weird and bizarre. With that said, I still liked it. One of the things that I liked about his screenplay was the fact that it was very different from any conventional film that you will see. You have a talking mold, a main character breaking the fourth wall with self-narration and weird supporting characters. This is the type of film where I would rip the screenplay to shreds. But in a weird way, it made me interested in the main characters. When that happens, I can forgive all of the absurdity that takes place like I did here with this film. The other thing that I liked was the fact the screenplay focuses on the main character and the talking mold. The whole film takes place in an apartment. Usually you start to get bored with it being in one setting, but what makes it work was Thacker’s ability to make sure that the dialogue is interesting enough to keep me interested in where the story was going.

The only problem that I have with this film was the fact that it was a little too long. I wished that this film was around ninety minutes, but it’s only a minor grip as I enjoyed this film. This is a film that is not for everyone. But if you’re a fan of films like “Street Trash and “Slime City”, then “Motivational Growth” is right up your ally as its oozing with weirdness and originality.

Plot Synopsis:

Unearthed Films recently send us over stills for their upcoming release of "My Demon Within", The film stars Adam Leclair, Nadine Bernecker and Carl Darchuck.

Plot Synopsis:

Cyril Bass is a good-hearted loser that works in a thankless corporate job where everyone takes advantage of him. His social life is also a total disaster; he holds a secret crush for his neighbor Callie but can't even muster a hello as they pass in the hallway. He has a very vivid imagination about how he'd wreak revenge on everyone that's done him wrong, but his morals and ethics keep those thoughts at bay. Cyril is constantly struggling with his darkest, most sinister side, his own demon. At his worst moment, the Demon entices Cyril to release him, promising revenge, fortune, popularity, and any woman of his choosing. Cyril's life does an about face as Demon slowly takes over, people begin to see him differently as every opportunity opens up to him, and Callie finally takes an interest in him. Too much blood is shed as his decision to release his demon takes its toll; his life is slipping in a downward spiral out of his control. Now the police are hot on his trail for murders he didn't commit, Cyril must fight his demon to get his life back and save the girl.
