Scare-A-Con: New England 2018 Preview: "420 Massacre" Review

This week on my Scare-A-Con New England preview, yours truly will be sharing my thoughts on one of the films that will be playing at the film program at the convention. Sometimes watching an interview may get me interested in watching a film. This was the case with “4/20 Massacre” after listening to the director and a couple of members of the cast talk about the film on a recent “Wicked Horror Show” episode, I decided to check this one out.

The film is about a group of women who go on a camping trip on the weekend of 4/20 for a fun weekend. But things take a terrifying turn when they stumble onto an illegal marijuana operation. Soon, they are stalked by someone who is sadistic and hell bent on protecting the operation at all costs. Can the women find a way out of the woods before they all go up in smoke? The film stars Jamie Bernadette (I Spit on Your Grave), Stacy Danger (The Neon Demon) and Jim Storm (Dark Shadows).

Usually any horror film that deals with marijuana in the plot or subplot comes off as stupid. Look at some of the Evil Bong films or the Friday the 13th remake for examples of how the marijuana plot or subplot goes off the rails. The only time that it doesn’t do that is “The Cabin in the Woods” even though the main character is a stoner and everything worked perfectly in that film. When I finished viewing 4/20 Massacre, I was surprised at the end of the film that this was very good considering this felt like a serious film especially towards the end than most stoner horror films.

One of the things that makes this film good was the way writer/director Dylan Reynolds directs this. I liked how he makes sure the dialogue scenes are interesting to watch. Whether it’s the way that the scenes were shot to how he gets the performances that he needs to make this work, everything works very well as I was interested in everything that was going on in the story. The other thing that Reynolds does well to make sure that he has an effects team to make the gore effects very good. There were a couple of death scene that standout whether in a creative way or an emotional way. It was the effects of it that generated a reaction that is needed for those scenes to work.

The cast in the film was very good as they had chemistry with each other and worked well with their characters. It made the film entertaining as this has some very good performances from Jamie Bernadette, Vanessa Reynolds and Stacy Danger. They did a good job making sure their characters were interesting while interacting with each other and other cast members. It helped with making this film an entertaining one.

Dylan Reynolds’ screenplay was very good. I liked how the female characters in the film weren’t the stereotypical kinds that you would see in other slasher films as they come off as strong female characters. It made the film work well as they were different and I didn’t have to worry about annoying or clichéd characters appearing that would usually slow down a film like this. I wished more slashers had these kind of strong and non-stereotypical female characters as the genre and especially slasher films should appeal to everyone. Also, I thought the death scenes had a certain intense or emotional feel to them. This helped kept my interest with the story. It’s something that is needed for you to be invested in the material of this or any slasher film.

This is one of the better stoner horror films to come out in a while as it has strong characters and creative death scenes. “4/20 Massacre” is slasher film that you can get high too.

“4/20 Massacre” will be screening on July 16th at 5pm at Scare-A-Con New England which will take place in Framingham, MA at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center.

If you can’t make it to Framingham, MA, the film is currently available on DVD and VOD.

Film Review "Party Bus to Hell"

When I first heard about “Party Bus to Hell”, this had one of those horror titles that sounds like a fun movie that looks like it’s going to be a fun time. When I come across a title like this, you can count me interested. But the other thing that got me interested was the fact that this was film was being directed by Rolfe Kanefsky, who has directed such crazy horror films such as “Nightmare Man” which was a part of After Dark Horrorfest 2 back in 2007 and his first film “There’s Nothing Out There” which Troma released the 20th anniversary edition of the film back in 2011 and is available on Amazon Prime.

The film is about a group of young adults who head to Burning Man on a party bus. They are hoping to have a good time but that get ruined when the bus all of a sudden breaks down in the isolated desert. This party takes a turn for the worst when a satanic group crashes the party and everything goes to hell. The remaining survivors barricade themselves as they try find a way to survive this party before it completely goes to hell and no one is left alive.

This was one of those films where I thought it was going to be a very bad film as I couldn’t stand Tara Reid’s performance in opening scene. It made me think to myself what I was getting myself into. Thankfully, it was only that opening scene in the film. After that, I was totally having fun with “Party Bus from Hell” as it was a good ride.

What made this film work so well for me was Rolfe Kanefsky’s direction as this had the same feel of his first film. One of the things that makes his direction very good was the way he directs the film’s material. Whether it’s was the way that he and his effects team uses the gore effectively and creatively to how each of the scenes are approached, it gives you that fun B movie goodness that makes you feel like you’re having a good time as this was creepy and fun. The other thing that I liked about this was the fact the performances added to the film’s fun and creepy tone. Kanefsky does a great job making sure that you like the performances even though it has your typical horror stereotypes. What makes it overcome those stereotypes was the way that the performances gelled together. He does a very good job making sure the cast is having fun with the material at hand as it showed on screen. The film also has a couple of standout performances from actresses Stefani Blake and Sadie Katz which added to the film being creepy and fun.

The screenplay written by Kanefsky, and producers Sonny and Michael Mahal was pure B movie fun. The screenplay does a very good job being creative and creepy. One of the things that makes it fun was the fact that they make sure the scenes keeps moving as there wasn’t a dull moment. Whether it’s the way the dialogue scenes are handled to how they keep you guessing what the endgame of the story is, it’s done in a way that it’s fun and you’re having a blast. The other thing that I liked about this was the fact it incorporates homages to films like “Demons”, “The Hills Have Eyes” and “The Road Warrior” so well with the film’s story that helps enhance the film’s story especially with one of the film’s sex scenes which will never make you look at sex scenes again as it gives you a great horrific image. This was a fun screenplay from the writers as this was something I would want to watch again.

Overall, this film was one very fun ride as it has all that you want in a B-movie. All aboard this “Party Bus to Hell” as it’s a creepy and fun ride that leads you on to the highway to hell.

Me and Toxie: My Thoughts on Meeting the Late John Alramura at Terror Con 2014

Before I start my thoughts about my encounter with John Alramura meant to me, I want to send my condolences to John Alramura’s family and friends for their loss as last night news broke that he passed away.

It’s been less than 24 hour before I went to bed last night when I came across a friend’s post on Facebook informing me that John Alramura passed away. I had to do a little research on it for confirmation purposes but found that to be sadly true. There’s also a news story on Bloody Disgusting that came out this afternoon to confirm this.

I felt compelled to write about this in an article form because it was something that I wanted to write about as I couldn’t do it in a simple Facebook or Twitter post on my personal pages. This was one of my favorite convention moments as he was the first celebrity that I had my picture taken with.

John Alramura was no Bruce Campbell, was no Robert Englund, was no Jeffery Combs and was even no Dick Miller. He was known to cult film fans as Toxie from Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Hetz’s “The Toxic Avenger Part 2” and “The Toxic Avenger Part 3: The Last Temptation of Toxie”. But to me, he was the first celebrity that I’ve taken a photo with at a convention. The convention was Terror Con in June 2014 in Providence,RI.

A little background to why this encounter with Alramura is special to me. This was the third pop culture convention that I’ve even been to and first horror convention. Was very excited to meet him, as I’m a big fan of “The Toxic Avenger” series. At the time, I was very camera shy, I would get nervous meeting celebs and have a social disorder that makes it difficult for me to interact with people that I don’t know at times which I still have today.

To my memory, I think he was the first or second celeb that I saw at Terror Con that year. He was a nice guy. Met him for a couple of minutes. I was getting my autograph and I was talking about the two Toxic Avengers films that he was in. After getting my autograph, he asked me if I wanted to take a picture with him for no extra charge. At the time, I never knew that some horror celebs wouldn’t charge for table photos if you purchased an autograph. So I agreed to it. That experience changed the way that I approached meeting celebrities at conventions because that was one of those special moments that I’ve had at any convention as the picture at the top was my first picture of me with any convention guest. He made me feel comfortable with the process. It also sparked something in me to have a fun time at that convention.

This encounter would also change my thoughts on taking pictures with celebrities at conventions as I felt comfortable doing it and it added to that special feel of meeting a convention guest. This encounter would also give me the willingness to pay the extra $20 to take a picture with Dee Snider on that day after being convinced by Snider’s handle which is another moment that I cherish but would've never given in and spend that extra $20 if I didn't meet John that day. Because of that encounter, I now budget table photos and autographs into my convention budget when planning my budget for conventions because feel more comfortable in doing them at cons now than I did before

Even though, I only saw John Alramura was a couple of minutes, he truly holds a special place in my heart and fandom as if it wasn’t for that encounter, I probably wouldn’t be taking pictures with celebs and wrestlers at conventions at the rate I do today.

R.I.P: John Alramura
