Press Release:

Escape From Jesus Island returns on 6/6/16

The Apocalyptic horror comic, Escape From Jesus Island, returns with its forth installment, “What Lies Beneath,” on June 6.

The series, endorsed by horror legend Clive Barker, follows a botched attempt to clone the savior that inadvertently unleashes the Antichrist and hordes of cannibalistic mutant freaks. When the Vatican Black Ops arrive to try to steal the reborn Christ for themselves, all hell breaks loose.

“From the start, bringing our fans into the story has been a big priority for us,” said Escape From Jesus Island writer Shawn French. “And I mean that literally. The majority of the characters in our comic are modeled after our earliest fans and Kickstarter backers. In Episode 4 alone, 29 fans make an appearance.”

For each cameo, fans send artist Mortimer Glum reference photos in various angles and expressions, which he uses to create their comic book counterpart. The 32-page Episode 4 features 30 pages of panel artwork, which the creators believe is one of the things that sets them apart from the majors. “While most comics seem focused on padding issues so they deliver the least amount of content possible, we do it all wrong,” French said. “Our focus is always on how much story we can cram into each issue… and Episode 4 is packed cover to cover.”

You can pre-order your $3.99 copy of Episode 4 here, or catch up on the series with Episodes 1-4 for $12.99 here.

The ongoing comic book series was originally launched via Kickstarter and will be returning there in June for a new campaign to print a trade paperback of Episodes 1-4. There will be more opportunities for backers to be immortalized in print, including a chance to join the ongoing cast as one of the Antichrist’s most trusted Apostles.

Film Review: Regression

You would think a film starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson would appear on your radar screen when looking at upcoming theatrical films. This wasn’t the case with their latest film “Regression”, as the first time I heard about it was when I did a news story about the film’s upcoming home video release. It got me thinking that this looked like one of those films where it must have been shelved or is bad enough that it was released quietly release in limited release. Still, I wanted to that chance and see this.

The film takes place in 1990 where a detective (Ethan Hawke) is investigating a horrific crime when a young woman (Emma Watson) thinks that her father John is involved. Soon, her father admits that without recollection that he committed that crime. A psychologist is brought in to help John as he tries re-piece the moments his mind and find out what truly happens. This unveils what truly happened. The film also co-stars David Dencik and David Thewlis.

No wonder why this never made it into many theaters in the first place. That was my first thought after watching “Regression”. It was very surprising that this was very bad because this had a good cast on paper and the fact that I really liked Alejandro Amenabar’s “The Others”. Sadly, this was a film where I felt bored from start to finish as nothing works.

Most of the reason why I didn’t like this film was Amenabar’s direction. One of the things that I didn’t like about it was the fact that nothing grabbed my attention. Whether it was the way the scenes were approached to how he approaches the action, everything was just flat out dull and not engaging. When that happens, you lose interest in a film like I did with this film. The other thing that Amenabar doesn’t do right was the way that he handles the performances. It felt the same as the directing. You would think the performance aspect would be decent with Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson in this, but it wasn’t the case as they didn’t look like they were interested in the material. Their performances felt more phoned in, as they didn’t bring anything to their characters that. It’s the bad directing and screenplay that made it all possible.

Speaking of the screenplay, it was very bad from start to finish. One of the things that I didn’t like was the way Amenabar writes some of the film’s scenes. It felt like there was nothing in them to make me interested with what was happening in the story. Some of the scenes felt like it came out of something that you would see in a Lifetime film as it felt dull and lifeless at times. The other thing that makes this bad was the fact the character and story development either wasn’t there as it felt rushed and not important. It would’ve been nice to slow down and develop everything. This would’ve made the story a little more interesting. Instead, I’m not given a reason to care about the characters or the action that takes place.

This is easily one of the worst films that I’ve seen so far this year as there is nothing good about this. From its weak direction to an unenergetic screenplay, “Regression” is a film that should’ve stayed on the studio shelves.

"Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket" Set to Premiere on Troma Now

Troma Entertainment recently send the horror chamber information and stills for "Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket". The film has won numerous awards on the film festival scene including Best Picture (Crypticon Seattle), Best Director and Best Horror Comedy (Fear Fete), Audience Award (Seattle True Independent Film Festival), Best Special Effects Make-Up (Freak Show Horror Fest), and Best Slasher Film (Fright Night Film Fest).

"Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket" makes its premiere on Troma's VOD service "Troma Now" starting on June 1st.

For more information on this film, you can visit the film's official website at: http://junkbucketmovie.com/.

Press Release:

Greetings from Tromaville!

He's not a garbage man, but he's come back for your junk! That's right, kids! Your favorite dick-nosed, ball-cheeked, bucket-headed slasher is back in Stephen Lange's psycho-satire, Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket. Witness Junkbucket and his found family of phallic cannibals as they terrorize Lake Pakajanomo (where your package is no mo) in their quest to castrate most of Washington State. Junk Bonds is to be an official World Premiere movie released by Troma Entertainment on Troma Now (available at watch.troma.com ), the independent movie studio's video-streaming-on-demand-service that launched this year, it was announced today by Lloyd Kaufman, prexy of Troma Entertainment and creator of The Toxic Avenger.

Junk Bonds is, in the words of director Stephen Lange, "a love letter/satire of slasher movies of the 70's and 80's (specifically the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series and the Troma classic Mother's Day". Beautifully filmed in the magnificent lush scenery of Washington State, this phallocentric gore-fest will delight and terrify genre fans the world over as Junkbucket and his family menace and mutilate hillbillies, bikers, strippers and more! A death-defying tale of love, loss and redemption, Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket is at once classic in its homage to the 1970's country road slasher pioneers the filmmaker was influenced by as well as through his carefully articulated art direction but by way of content the ultra-vulgar visuals and actions point out to the audience that they may be blessed with total desensitization to things that should be sexy and things that should be sickening. The topical nature of Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket uses the same comedy technique you may recognize in the movie Naked Gun, for example. Extremely grotesque and highly naturalistic special effects create a fantastical yet unnervingly earthly set for the carnal man meals, and in this way Lange's Junk Bonds is vivid and surreal.

Using a genre blending style that makes reference to the new forms in cinema innovated by Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment, and developed by capturing the foul yet erotic essence of 1980's youth culture in the USA with movies like Class of Nuke 'Em High and The Toxic Avenger. Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket was made with a deliberate, self-aware approach to filmmaking and storytelling that is at once well crafted but also doesn't try to convince us about anything. The artful style blending and dedication to the complexities of good versus evil in the villain and a victim relationship are no doubt with good company in Tromaville. In fact, Lange's homicidal anti-hero, inbred and castrated by his mother at birth, was also the featured murder junky in original 2008 feature film, Junkbucket, which is also distributed by Troma Entertainment.

Hideously scarred and not unlike other "misunderstood" terrible humans, who sometimes also occasionally experience feelings inside, Junkbucket will touch your heart... and maybe your balls, just a little? Ryan Miller portrays the titular "Bucket-headed mongoloid", Junkbucket. The wildly talented cast also features Sara Coates ("Pie Girl - Z Nation, Laggies), Ryan Higgins (Z Nation), and a bunch other dicks (literally). Junk Bonds: The Return of Junkbucket has already received a number of awards from a variety of festivals across the country, including awards for Best Picture (Crypticon Seattle), Best Director and Best Horror Comedy (Fear Fete), Audience Award (Seattle True Independent Film Festival), Best Special Effects Make-Up (Freak Show Horror Fest), and Best Slasher Film (Fright Night Film Fest).

Scare-A-Con Invades the New England Area

Lately I’ve been trying new things on this site. Another thing that I want to try on this site is writing some articles. Some of it will do with my personal or film related thoughts on things relating to horror, sci-fi, and exploration genres. Others like this one will be about event that yours truly is attending. With that said, I want to start this by talking about an upcoming trip that I’m about to take in two week, It has to do with a horror convention that I will be attending.

When I first heard Scare A Con was running in the New England area this summer, I was very happy because I wanted to go a horror convention so bad this year. Also, their past lineups in NY have been good enough to be interested in this.I’ve been to Comic Cons, a couple of Rocky Cons, but I’ve only been to horror convention once. That happened in 2014 when Terror Con ran in my home state of Rhode Island. I was hoping to go there this year but it’s not happening for the second year in a row. That’s when I got the idea to make the trip to Springfield, MA for Scare-A-Con: New England.

The event will be taking place from June 3rd to June 5th at the Mass Mutual Center. This will be the first time that they will be running a convention outside New York where they're based out of. The lineup is very good for the most part. Guest scheduled to be there include Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, The Crow), Adrianne Barbeau (Escape from New York, Creepshow), Margot Kidder (Black Christmas, The Amityville Horror), Derek Meres (Friday the 13th, Predators), P.J. Soles (Halloween, Carrie), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Jordan Ladd (Grindhouse, Cabin Fever), Film critic and Monstervision host Joe Bob Briggs and the mads from Mystery Science Theater 3000 Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff.

The convention will also have two 35th anniversary reunions and screenings for “Frankenhooker” and “Night of the Creep”. Guests for “Night of the Creep” includes Tom Akins (Halloween III, Escape from New York), Jason Lively (National Lampoon’s European Vacation), Jill Whitlow (Porky’s, Weird Science) and Steve Marshall. Guests for “Frankenhooker” include Patty Mullen and James Lorinz.

Besides that, the convention will also have screenings of classic horror films such as “The Devil’s Reject” “Creepshow” and “Halloween” (1978) along with the New England premieres of SRS Cinema's latest films “She Kills”, “Empire State of the Dead” and “Night of Something Strange”. There will also be Q&A Panels, Vendors, Parties and more.

This lineup has me excited for this convention. Scare-A-Con: New England takes place June 3-5th at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, MA. For more information on “Scare-A-Con: New England”, you can goto: http://www.scareacon.com

Retro Review "Repo!: The Genetic Opera"

This is a segment on the site call Retro Review. This will feature old horror reviews that I did for Film-Arcade.net. For my first retro review, I decided to revisit an old DVD review of a cult classic.

When I think about my favorite musicals, this is one of my favorites. One will always be “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” after loving since seeing it in 2012, but my number two favorite musical is “Repo!: The Genetic Opera”. Back in 2008 when I first heard about the film, I couldn’t wait to see it in theaters. That never happened, as it had a very limited theatrical release. I finally got my chance to watch and review the film in the beginning of 2009 when the DVD release of the film came out for film-arcade.net. After watching it, I felt like I just watched a film that felt something special. Fast forward to today, I still love and enjoy this film to this day as I have the same love for this film, as I do for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Without further ado, here is my 2009 review of “Repo” The Genetic Opera”.

"Repo! The Genetic Opera" is a film that have I’ve been personally been looking forward to as a fan of the horror genre. But what made me more curious about the film, when Lionsgate decided to release this film on a few screens back in November. I couldn’t understand why because it’s received the kind of positive buzz on the Internet from a lot of major horror sites like Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting. The film was also gaining a cult following online before the movie is even released.

The film takes place in the future where there is a worldwide epidemic of organ failure, until a biotech company finds a cure. But it’s comes at a price and if you don’t pay, your body parts and organ can be reposed by the repo man.

The film follows Shilo Wallace (Alexis Vega), a young girl who is forced to stay at her father in a gothic house after inheriting a genetic disease at childbirth. Her father Nathan Wallace (Anthony Steward Head) is very protective and is hiding a dark and murderous secret from her. She then begins to discover something from her mother’s past when Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino) offers her the chance to be cured from her disease. She will then journey out of the house to find her cure. During that journey, she runs into formerly blind opera singer (Sarah Brightman) that wants out of her contract with Genco after signing her life away to see again. While Shilo is away, Nathan is struggling with demons of his own while doing the bidding of his boss Rotti Largo. Largo is also having problems as he’s diagnosed with terminal cancer and can’t find a worth heir to his throne, as all of his three children are failures to him, because one is a murderer (Bill Moseley), the other is a rapist (Ogre from “Skinny Puppies"), and their sister (Paris Hilton) is hooked on a drug known as Zydrate and is addicted to surgery. Soon all of these characters will collide at Genco’s opera, where every secret and power struggled will be revealed as it’s sure to be one fun and bloody time at the opera tonight.

There are some films that you get a sense that you’ve just seen something special after seeing it for the first time. The last time that I’ve felt this way was back in early 2007, when I saw “Pan's Labyrinth" for the first time on the big screen. On that occasion, it was the fairy tale like atmosphere that made me coming out of theater thinking that was special. Fast forward to today after watching “Repo!: The Genetic Opera”, I felt that same way after watching it. The reason that I felt that way after seeing it was the vision and the originality the film has and it was a shame that it didn’t get a proper theatrical release that it deserves.

Darren Lynn Bousman’s direction was great. He achieves in making the direction good, by making the film feel frightening and its dark visionary look at the future. The atmosphere fits with the dark subject matter that this film tackles. Another thing that Bousman does very well was the way he tackles the back stories by using comic bookish storyboards and various types of film to give background on the main characters. It makes it very stylish and makes you pay attention to the character’s background. It’s very acceptable here, as this is a rock opera not a movie. Bousman also directs the musical sequences very well. I liked how the music sequences were non-stop as the film never slows down, which makes this very entertaining. The acting was great, as he makes sure that the performances fit the tone to what song each actor is singing. This is usually a hard thing, as the actors are singing the songs before and having to match the same intensity when lip-sync it on camera. Bousman achieves that very well, as it has the energy that cult-classics are made off.

The screenplay written by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich was very good. One of things that the screenwriters did very well was to make the music non-stop. They did that because they wanted the viewer to come out of the film and say that they saw an event, not a movie. The songs were also great. I liked how all the songs made sense with the film’s main plotline. It makes you very invested with the story. Their character development was very good, as they took their time and develop them in a way that you become interested with the characters. This helps makes these characters so loved by fans and devotees of this film.

“Repo! The Genetic Opera” blends elements of such classical films like “Blade Runner” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” into a dark and gothic rock opera that is sure to be talked about for years to come. Please support this film on DVD or Blu-Ray, so we can get the special edition and director’s cut that lovers of the film truly deserved.

Film Rating: Five Stars

Press Release:

Innovative Director Fruit Chan (Made in Hong Kong, Durian Durian) seamlessly blends a variety of genres -- including mystery, thriller, sci-fi and comedy -- for the critically-acclaimed, end-of-the-world satire THE MIDNIGHT AFTER, debuting June 21 on DVD and digital from Well Go USA Entertainment. Variety’s Maggie Lee noted that “Fruit Chan bends genre like it’s putty in his hands, distilling the macabre from the everyday and making the apocalyptic seem absurdly matter-of-fact.” In Hong Kong, a group of 16 people on a city bus emerge from a tunnel to find the entire population of the city has vanished. Based on a cult internet novel by “Mr. Pizza,” the film follows the eclectic group as they deal with horrific discovery … The cast includes Simon Yam (Kill Zone 2), Wong You Nam (IP Man), Janice Man (Turning Point 2), Kara Hui (Lock Me Up, Tie Him Down), Chui Tien You (Contagion), Lam Suet (Kung Fu Hustle), Vincci Cheuk (Kick Ass Girls), Lee Sheung Ching (Stool Pidgeon), Sam Lee (Lost in Hong Kong) and Cherry Ngan (Mojin: The Lost Legend).

Following its premiere at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, THE MIDNIGHT AFTER was nominated for eight Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor & Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Screenplay, winning for Original Film Score. In addition, the film received Best Picture and Best Director nods at the 2015 Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.
