Film Review: "Piranha 3DD"

With the Halloween Horror Movie Madness on Facebook just around the corner, they are currently having the "Creatures from the Deep" week over there. It got me thinking to what film I should review. I gave it thought, until was looking through my blu-ray horror collection and realized that I came across a film that fits the theme and I've reviewed it in the past for Film-Arcade.net. It was decided that I would share my review of "Piranha 3DD".

It's interesting to note that the film is directed by John Gulager (Feast) and stars Danielle Panabaker (The Flash, Friday the 13th (2009)), David Koechner (Anchorman, Cheap Thills) and features appearances from Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation, Pulp Fiction), Gary Busey (Silver Bullet, Lethal Weapon), David Hasselholf (Baywatch,  Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival 2) and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit).

The Piranhas are back and they’re head upstream from Lake Victoria to a swimming park known as “The Big Wet”. The staff and the patrons have no idea what coming their way. Can they survive the onslaught of piranhas or end up as there next meal.

Sometimes when I’m watching a film, there are some things that I like to rip apart to and there are some things where you actually enjoyed watching all the badness. “Piranha 3DD” is one of those films, where you think that this should be a negative review, but I couldn't help that I had fun with it.

John Gulager does a good job for what he had to work from. He sets out to makes the watching experience a fun time. From the way the set up his scenes to the major bloodbath in the third act, he does a very good job making the scenes feel fun to the viewer and tries to make you forget some of the rushed sequences. The acting was passable, as this wasn’t surprisingly annoying. Gulager does a very good job making the acting not feel too over the top that it turns you off. It especially helped with Hasselhoff’s performance, as I actually enjoy him a lot in a comedic way. He was the best part of this film.

The screenplay written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton was flat out awful for the first two acts before having it somewhat saved in the third act. One of the things that I didn’t like about it was the fact the scenes felt like they were rushed. There wasn’t any character development and no setup to the death scenes with made the film feel like a fast viewing experience. It could have made the film even more fun, if they were set up properly. There is no excuse to have scenes rushed, when the film has 71 minutes of material and 12 minutes of padding. It really aggravates me when that happens. It tells me that the screenwriting process was either rushed or the writers didn’t care about it.

The only thing that saves this and turns it into a guilty pleasure was the third act. I liked how they handles Hasselhoff’s role here. He’s given material that makes his presence feel comedic instead of just waiting to see if a piranha would bite him to death. That and the third act bloodbath are the only good things about this screenplay.

If you want to see a mindless film, then this is your film. If you’re expecting a good follow up to “Piranha”, you’ll be very disappointed. “Piranha 3DD” is one of those films, where you clearly classify as guilty pleasure because of a good third act.

Review Rating: Two and a Half Stars

Blu-Ray Review: "Mark of the Devil"

“Mark of the Devil” marks the first release from Arrow Video that I was able to watch. I was very curious about this label over the years after hearing how they give their British releases the Criterion treatment. This was the first released that I was interested in because of I’m into those types of films about exploitation films of British cinema and witches in general.

The film is about a witchfinder’s apprentice (Udo Kier) who comes to a small Austrian village where he falls in love with a girl. When his master (Herbert Lom) arrives in town, his faith in him is tested when his master deems the girl to be a witch. If matters isn’t worse for him, the town witchmaster general (Reggie Nalder) is a sadistic person that rushes to judgement and want to burn her at the stake. Now caught in the middle, can he find a way to help her escape a violent death before she ends up dead?

“Mark of the Devil” is surprisingly a good film given its subject matter. Director Michael Armstrong does a very good job making the material of the film interesting and shocking. Whether it was the way that the scenes were filmed to how he makes the images feel and look so horrifying, it kept me on edge. The other thing that Armstrong does well, he makes sure that the acting fits the film’s demented tone. He does a very good making sure that most of the main characters performances are villainous. It helped gave me the reaction that I wanted towards them as most of the characters in the film are sick and repulsive. Armstrong also makes sure that his cast had great chemistry with each other. The scenes between Herbery Lom and Udo Keir were great here. Both of the actors had great chemistry with each other. It helped made me more interested in this film especially towards the end.

The screenplay written by Sergio Sasstner and Perry Parker does a very good job making sure that this was horrifying. One of the things that makes this good was the way they made sure the story was very dark from the start. All the horror scene had a certain level of shock to them. Whether it was the execution scenes to the interrogations scenes, everything generated a reaction. It helped made all the horror aspects of the film work well, as those scenes left me horrified and made me turn away from the screen. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the way it develops its main characters. I liked the how the writers do a good job focusing on Lom and Keir’s characters and the beliefs that each of those characters have during the course of the film. Even though they weren’t good, at least one of the characters changes during the course of the film. It makes for some very good exchanges and tension between Keir and Lom’s characters.

The special features start out with the audio commentary track with director Michael Armstrong moderated by Calum Waddell. This was a very good track. I liked how both Armstrong and Waddell cover a lot of things from the production of the film to some of the film’s subject matter to the film’s release and other films of this nature. It made for a very good and interesting track.

The next feature is “Hallmark of the Devil”: an interview with Fangoria editor Michael Gingold. The feature talks about the original release of the film and the gimmicks and retitles that Hallmark Films used on other exploitation releases that made those films successful. It was an interesting interview on the history of those films and how it became successful. It’s worth checking out if you’re into those exploitation films of that era.

After that, is “Mark of the Devil: Then and Now”. This featurette showcases the locations used in the film and how it looks now. Not a bad featurette as it was nice to revisit the film’s locations from the time the film was filmed to now.

The next featurette on the disc is “Mark of the Time”. This featurette was about the new wave of British horror in the sixties and seventies. It’s an interesting documentary on the British films that were released during that period of British horror cinema. The interviews were interesting enough to keep my interest.

After that the disc wraps with interviews from most of the cast, outtakes, trailer and a photo gallery.

“Mark of the Devil” is one of those films that does a great job frightening you with its shock value. It also worth watching for the direction of Michael Armstrong and performances of Hebert Lom and Udo Keir.

Review Rating: Four Stars.

Film Review: Within These Walls

When I first heard about "Within These Wall, I was interested in this film because the plot looked interesting and the fact that I liked James Tucker’s last two horror films, “Skinned Alive” and “Pink Eye”. Those film focused more on the blood and gore but this was completely different from those films.

The film is about woman (Kelsey Zukowski), who moves back to her childhood home after the death of her mother (Laura Godown-Mortensen). She’s hoping to find out answers to why her mother killed herself. Soon, she becomes haunted and held captive by a malevolent spirit who has invaded her life. The only way to escape the horror that awaits her is to find out why the truth about what happened to her mother and get rid of the spirit that exists in the house.

Going into this film, I was expecting “Within These Walls” would be a straight up horror film with the necessary psychological and supernatural elements that encompasses all supernatural films. But to my surprise, this film has very serious tone with chilling elements that make me horrified and entertained.

One of things that I liked about this was James Tucker’s direction. He does a good job making sure the film has a dark and creepy tone in the way that he approaches and directs. Whether it was the way the film looked to how he approaches the flashback and dreamlike sequences, everything had a gothic feel to it. It helped make the sequences on the page work on screen. Like his previous films to this film, he always does a great job making sure his horror films have a dark feel and look to them. The other thing that he does well is making sure the acting was very good. He does a very good job focusing on how he directs the performances especially with the lead actress. This was one of those films where the main performance is key to its success but Tucker does a great job directing his lead actress Kelsey Zukowski. He makes sure the performance fits the film’s dark tone throughout the whole film. It makes the film work, as I was interested with the material.

Speaking of Zukowski’s performance, it was one the best things in the film. She does a great job making sure her character doesn’t feel like the typical clichéd performance that you see other films of this nature. This could’ve gone down another way with another actor, but Zukowski makes sure that she brings a level of emotion to some of the film’s key scenes. This helped take the film to another level, which is needed for a film like this to work.  Zukowski does a great job making you interested in her character throughout the film is interesting and engaging as this looked like a difficult part to pull off given the nature of the role and the story, I hope this performance will help her get more roles in the future, as she was great in the film.

The screenplay written by Tucker and Zukowski does a very good job developing the main character and the film's backstory. They spend a good time focusing on past events with the main character’s mother that took place the house to how something is haunting and tormenting the film’s main character. By doing that, it helped with the progression of the story and its main character. It also helped make this film feel more of a serious horror film than other films of this nature. The other thing that makes this good was the fact the story had a creepy tone to it. The writers do a good job making sure the tone of the story was consistent throughout. Whether it’s the way the way the scenes were created to how it was executed on paper, everything had a dark gothic tone to them which made the supernatural scenes feel frightening and uneasy to watch on screen.

I highly suggest, you find this when it hits the film festival circuit. This is one of the better independent horror films out there. This film has a great lead performance from Kelsey Zukowski and very good directing from James Tucker. “Within These Walls” is a terrifying and creepy film that will shock you and keep you awake all night.

Although the slasher film was in decline by the mid-1980s, there were still some grisly delights to be had... and they don't come much grislier than writer-director Buddy Cooper's sickening stalk-and-slash classic The Mutilator! When Ed receives a message from his father asking him to go and lock up the family's beach condo for the winter, it seems like the perfect excuse for an alcohol-fuelled few days away with his friends. After all, his dad has forgiven him for accidentally blowing mom away with a shotgun several years ago... hasn't he? But no sooner are the teens on the island than they find themselves stalked by a figure with an axe (and a hook, and an onboard motor) to grind... Originally entitled Fall Break (watch out for the incongruous theme song of the same name!), The Mutilator has earned a reputation amongst horror fans as one of the 'holy grails' of 80s splatter mayhem due to its highly inventive (and not to say, decidedly gruesome) kill sequences, courtesy of FX wizard Mark Shostrom (Videodrome, Evil Dead II). Finally making its long-awaited bow in High-Definition, The Mutilator has returned to terrorise a whole new generation of horror fans!

But Jim does not want to be Helen's toy boy any more. \He wants to marry his lover, Laura. He pays a psychopathic killer of women to murder Helen so that he will inherit his wife's millions. But the psycho killer has his own plans. Suspecting Jim will double cross him, he engineers a complex scheme that will give him the upper hand. Very much in the style of the violent and baroque "Giallo" thrillers from 1970s Italy, The Wife Killer is a twisted, shocking and brutal exploration of the devious male psyche. Previously only released to cinemas in a cut version, this is the first official DVD release of the film in the U.S., complete and uncensored. He forced his victims to submit to abnormal sexual behavior.
