Press Release:

Troy Escamilla and Renee K. Smith, in collaboration with Fright Meter Films, are set to produce their first ever feature film and bring true terror to the screen in Fall 2016. Titled Party Night and penned by Escamilla, the film is a throwback to 80’s slasher films such as Prom Night and Hell Night. This is the first feature film produced by Fright Meter Films, and the passion for this project is immense. “This film is truly a love letter to fans of genre. There are many references in the script that horror fans will grin widely at, but the film is still unique in its own right,” Escamilla states.

Escamilla has a goal of raising $10,500 by March 10th, 2016 with the Party Night campaign. Troy Escamilla knows the horror genre. He founded the Fright Meter Awards, which have grown in respect and popularity over the last few years with global backers that make up the over 50 member international Award Committee, including bloggers, writers, directors, producers, actors and fans in the horror genre.

What makes Party Night the perfect first project for Fright Meter Films is that it is fairly simplistic in its structure and content: there are only seven characters in the script and 85% of it takes place at one location, which equates to a modest budget. Collaborations are happening with other independent filmmakers, such as Kevin Sommerfield, who wrote and produced both Don't Go to the Reunion and Dismembering Christmas. Sommerfeld is on board as producer to lend his expertise on low budget independent filmmaking. Renee K. Smith, has experience as a playwright, producer, and director in the Houston area.

Film Review: "Martyrs"

When I first heard that when the remake of “Martyrs”, I wasn’t thrilled about the news. The original was very good plus I wouldn’t have think that a U.S. remake would be possible given the film subject matter in general. But here we are, they have remade this film too. What’s next a remake of another great foreign horror film or another remake of a horror classic that I enjoy? Let’s get back to the film in hand, as that’s another subject for another time.

The film is about a woman named Lucie (Troian Bellsario) who is haunted over the traumatic events that led to her kidnapping ten years ago. The only time she feels safe is when she’s with her friend Anna (Bailey Noble). As the events still torment her to this day, she and Anna go looking for the people who took her. But when they get closer to the truth, they become trapped in a sadistically nightmare where escape maybe impossible.

Going into this film, I was wondering if the film would follow the same style as the original did. When I finished seeing this film, the tone and the intensity felt the same but the screenplay felt different and the scenes felt watered down. Still, this version of “Martyrs” is a very good film.

One of the things that makes this good was its direction. Michael and Kevin Goetz does a very good job making sure the film had the same feel as the original. Whether it’s the way that the action scenes were directed to how the scenes looked, everything moved at a good pace and had a level of intensity that kept my interested. The other thing that I liked about the directing was the fact that the lead performances were good. The Goetz brothers made sure the performances and chemistry between the main actresses work very well within the film’s context. It made the performances very good and helped move the story along. Speaking of the performances both Troian Bellsario (Pretty White Liars) and Bailey Noble (True Blood) were very good here. I liked how they made their characters interesting throughout. Both of them took their time to make sure that their performances were engaging and making the relationship between their characters work so well considering the film is very dark. It’s one of the best things about this film along with its direction.

The screenplay written by Mark L. Smith felt different but it was still good. What made this screenplay good was the fact that it had the same level of dread that the original had. It helped made the horror aspects work very well and made the story interesting. The other thing that makes this screenplay good was the level of action that this film has. Smith made sure those scenes have a level of intensity that was able to keep me interested. It felt like there was more action in this film than the original which I liked. The only drawback that I have with this screenplay was that it felt like it was watered down as the scenes weren’t as out of control like the original. Still, I liked this film a lot.

Even though this version of “Martyrs” feels watered down, this was a very good film. With its very good direction from Kevin and Michael Goetz and excellent performances from Troian Bellsario and Bailey Noble, “Marytrs” is an intense film from start to finish.

Review: "Harvest Lake"

“Harvest Lake” is the latest film from director Scott Schirmer, who directed the excellent film “Found” back in 2014 and produced the ultra-gory film “Headless” which was released last year. This film boasts an excellent cast that includes Elle Church (Headless), Tristan Risk (American Mary, The Editor) and Kevin Roach (The Confession of Fred Krueger).

The film is about five friends who go vacationing in the woods. They are hoping to have fun and have a good time. But something is lurking in the woods, as they feel like they’re under the spell of someone or something. Soon their behavior starts to become erratic and having strange feelings towards each other as they try to find out what is happening to them. Can they find out what’s the cause of their strange behavior before they become lost in woods forever? This was the first film that I didn’t know what to think about the sex scenes as they felt very horrifying and different in tone. It was something where you couldn’t take your eyes off because of the horrific nature and the level of despair that it represents. That’s what makes “Harvest Lake” a very interesting and entertaining sci-fi horror film.

One of the things that makes this very good was the way director/writer Scott Schirmer directs the action. Everything had a dark and uncomfortable feel to it. Whether it was the film’s beginning and end to some of the dialogue scenes, everything had a dark and creepy presence. Those scenes were created and directed well enough to have a sense of dread to them as it’s the first film where the sexual encounter felt like it had a gloomy and eerie feel to them. It also helped that the cinematography was very good as it added to what Schirmer achieves. The other thing that he does very well is to make sure the performances work. I liked how he handles each of the film’s performance. They fit the film’s tone very well that it keeps you interested in what’s happening. It’s important for a film like this to have it, as it’s more focused on tone than action.

Speaking of the performance, they were good here. The cast that includes Elle Church, Tristen Risk, Kevin Roach and Dan Nye did a very good job with the way that they each approached their characters. It helped especially with all the dialogue scenes in the middle of the film. The performances kept me interested with the material especially when it sets up the third act.

The screenplay written by Schirmer does a very good job with making the film’s tone very dark and gloomy. He approaches each of the film’s scenes with importance as everything including the sex scenes felt very dark as this has a very different feel compared to other alien films where there’s a lot of action and intense scenes. Instead, none of that is present as it focuses more on the story’s darker elements. The other thing that I liked about Schirmer’s screenplay was the fact it focuses on the characters and story at hand. He spends a good time developing the film’s story and characters making sure that those elements are the focus of film. If that didn’t happen, this would’ve been boring. Thankfully, it wasn’t the case as this was a very good alien film.

Check this film out when it comes when it hits a film festival or DVD and Blu-Ray, as this is a great alien film. With it great direction and chilling screenplay, “Harvest Lake” is terrifying alien film that make you think about having sex again.

Review Rating: Five Stars.

What critics are saying: “A lot of potential to plumb… Solid… Fun… Compelling… Extremely poetic… Complex and intriguing… BALLET OF BLOOD delivers big ideas … I appreciated a lot.” - Ain't It Cool News.

The motion picture won Audience Choice Award at the 2015 RIP International Horror Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Acting Ensemble and Best Editing. It should also appear on DVD very soon (a rare VHS is currently available on eBay for $89).

Synopsis: After years of emotional abuse and body shaming, two ballerina's drug-fueled fantasy, of viciously attacking their ballet school, becomes reality. Meanwhile, a nerdy ballerina starts writing a novel based on the events that transpired, deeply offending some for turning such sensitive material into a book, for young audiences. Soon, her and her sister realize every word being typed is somehow altering real life. Will this strange and psychedelic paralleling fantasy carry the sisters, along with anyone else, to a merciless blood-splattered doom?

The film stars Sydney Ray and Jessica Knopf, as the partners in crime. Laura Amelia as the dance teacher, Delphine, and Julia Faye West as company co-owner. The film also features Mindy Robinson as the prima ballerina, with Walter Hochbrueckner, Vera R. Taylor, Rubi Garcia, Marla Martinez, Jacqueline Marie Alberto, Dawna Lee Heising, Dallas Chandler, Krystall Schott, Georgie Borchardt, Sky Patterson, Christopher Arias, Kimberly Cohen, Robert Evans and Marylyn Brooks.

Produced by Julia Faye West, Sydney Raye, Vera R. Taylor, Walter Hochbrueckner, John Gonatos, Mikko Tervonen, Michael Anthony and Bouvier. Production design by Mystic Marlow. Art Direction by Ryan Henneman. Sound by Jean-Paul Inesta, stills by Mark Rakocy, script editing by H. Raven Rose. Written and directed by Jared Masters.
