Blu-Ray Review: "Fear Town USA"/ "The Slashening"

When I first heard about the “Fear Town U.S.A” and “The Slashening” being released as a double feature blu-ray, I was kind surprised since neither film has been release yet. But since this be released by Troma, I wanted to check this out because it sounded crazy enough that it might be good.

“Fear Town USA” Review

“Fear Town USA” is about a group of teens who are celebrating St.Blevins Day by parting the night away. By sinister things are happening on this night like a girl who is haunted by the spirit of her former classmate, a lonely teenager looking for a good time, a group of teens partying in the woods and an mental patient on the loose. This leads to pure terror and debauchery.

“Fear Town USA” was very funny film from start to finish. Director Brandon Basham does a very good job making sure the scenes move at a good pace through his direction of the action and comedy aspects. It had some very good laugh out loud moments and kept my interest in the action. He also does a good job making sure that his direction of the cast is good enough to make the funny moments work in the screenplay. Whether it’s the action scenes to how he makes sure that his cast is engaged with the material, everything is done to make sure that the performances look good on screen. It made some of the humor work. The screenplay written by Basham, Patrick Foy, Dan Kenkel, Samuel Narisi, Mark Vigeant and Reynard Alli does a very good job making sure that they balance both the horror and comedy aspects that this film has. It helped makes this film entertaining as the time moves along and there is funny material that works including a couple of laugh out loud moments. The other thing that this screenplay does well is to make sure that the stories interweave with each other and stay within the film’s main premise. It made the film entertaining and the separate stories in the film easy to follow.

“The Slashening” Review:

“The Slashening” follows a group of best friends who spend the night throwing a party that includes fun, pizza and boys. But someone is stalking them, as they enjoy the night away. Now, they are forced to confront this person as he’s look to end the party and them.

Contains minor spoilers

“The Slashening” is the better of the two films on this double feature disc. One of the reasons why I feel this was it felt there was more horror to it instead of a film that was played for laughs like “Fear Town U.S.A”. Sure there is some humor here but this film was gorier and the fact that it felt more like a horror film than comedy with horror elements.

Director Brandon Basham does a very good job making some of the death scenes have a bloody feel to them while also injecting some funny humor in them. It helped make some of those scenes stand out including a montage of the film’s killer offing pizza delivery boys in succession. It’s something that usually would be so redundant but it was played for humor which made it work. The other thing that makes this very good was the cast here was better in this film. Each member of the cast does a very good job making sure there characters are interested through their various traits. It make them interesting and it made the humor work and interested in these characters.

Basham’s screenplay was also good here. He does a very good job making sure the kills are creative. Whether it’s the way that he adds humor to those scenes or making them feel very gory, it does a very good job in keeping you interested in this film. If this was the run of the mill slasher film, this wouldn’t work at all. Since its also being played for laughs, it works so well here. The other thing that the screenplay does very well is to not take itself serious with the stereotypical characters that you would see in these films. Basham does a very good job making sure each of the characters have an awkward tone to them. I personally liked it, as it helps make a low budget film like this feel so fun to watch.

There’s isn’t many extras on this disc considering this there are two feature length films on this disc. It starts off with the commentary track for “Fear Town U.S.A” featuring writer/director Brandon Bassham, writer/producer Reynard Alli, actress Dana Clinkman, writer/actor Patrick Foy and producer Al Holm. The commentary is good here. They do a good job going into the productions of the film and bring up some stories of what happened during filmmaking of this film. It makes of for a lack of a behind the scenes featurette.

After that, there is a short film “Radiation March” then trailers for “Return to Return to Nuke em’ High” and “Cannibals: The Musical”. I had a very good time with both of these film as this is a solid fun release from Troma Entertainmet. With its humor and craziness, both “Fear Town U.S.A.” and “The Slashening” are both bloody fun horror comedies that micro budget horror and Troma fans will have fun with.

Review: Slasher.com

As a fan of the slasher genre, I usually will watch any type of slasher film. When I first came across “Slasher.com”, I was interested because it featured R.A Manhoff from Hatchet 2 and Jewel Shepard from Return of the Living Dead. It gained my interested immediately to the point that it was worth a look.

The film is about guy who meets a girl online. They decide on their first date to make it a special by renting a log cabin in the woods. They meet the owners of the cabin and things take a turn for the worse when the owners kidnap them and lock them up in their basement. Now, the new couple must find a way to escape them and the woods before it’s too late.

I wished that I never viewed this film as it was awful from start to finish. It’s been a long time since yours truly trashed a film. In fact the last time I had such hatred for a film that I never wanted to see it again was “Annebelle”. This is up there with that film as Slasher.com” was one film that I would like to forget and erase from my memory.

Director Chip Gubera doesn’t do anything to make anything in this film interesting. Whether it’s the way that he handles the action to the flow of the film, there was nothing that made me feel entertained as I was bored watching this film. I was waiting for something to get me into this film, instead I got scenes that has no intensity or they just fell flat. It also didn’t help that the performances were just awful. Gubera doesn’t take his time to make sure the performance aspects of the film work. The performances here come off as uninspiring and dull. Nobody looked like they wanted to be in this film. It made me not want to care about anything in the performances or the film all together. When that happen, you lose interest very quickly.

The screenplay by the Gubera and Chelsea Andes was even worse than the film’s direction. One of the things that I hated about this film was the characters. The screenplay gives you characters that are so generic and one dimensional that I didn’t care about them. When the film’s twists happens, I didn’t even care as I didn’t like any the characters at that point and it felt like it just came off as stupid. The other thing that I hated about this was the fact that nothing made sense. Whether it’s the film’s twists or the story, never did I get a sense that anything felt logical. It made for one tortuous viewing as I was waiting for this film to end.

There are plenty of good low budget slashers out there like “Strip Club Massacre” “Capture Kill Release” and “Are We the Waiting” which people should check out instead of this film. “Slasher.com” is one of those films that I couldn’t wait to disconnect as this was awful.

Review: "The Creeps"

It's been a while since I've done a blu-ray review here on the site. It also happens that I'm a big fan of Charles Band and Full Moon Features. So it was inevitable that I would check out “The Creeps” blu-ray and review it to see if it’s worth the conversion to blu-ray for you blu-ray lovers.

The film is about a mad scientist who brings to life the classic literary monsters Dracula, Frankenstein, the Werewolf and the Mummy. The only problem is they’re small sized people. Now in order to complete his insane plan to make them full figured, he seeks out to find a virgin to sacrifice so that his creations can be restored to full size. Can he be stopped before his classic monsters become full size to terrorize everyone?

I’ve seen a lot of Charles Band’s films over the years. Films like “Blood Dolls”, “Head of the Family and “Trophy Heads. “The Creeps” to me seems to come off as one of his weaker films that he’s done even though it isn’t Band’s fault due to the film’s weak script.

Director Charles Band does a good job directing this film. One of the things that he does well was to make sure the action keeps moving. He approaches the scenes in a way that it makes the action interesting even though he doesn’t have much of the screenplay with this film. The other thing that Band does well is to make sure the acting is good enough to keep your interest. That seems to be a trademark to Band’s films as he knows that the screenplays sometime tend to not be great. He’s able to cover that up with the performance aspect. It shows here especially with this film.

The screenplay by Benjamin Carr was bad. One of the things that I didn’t like about it was the fact there is no development whatsoever. I wished Carr could’ve took a little time to flesh out the main characters as everything seem to be moving so fast that it makes the story suffer. The other thing that I didn’t like about this was the fact nothing was scary. With monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Wolfman, I should’ve gotten a scary scene or two. Sadly, I didn’t get any of that here as it felt like it tries to go the humor route which was okay. Still, I was expecting more in this department. Thankfully, Band’s direction saves this film from becoming a complete mess.

Review: "Are We the Waiting"

Sometime a film with a catchy or interesting title will get my interest almost immediately. When I came across the title “Are We the Waiting”, it was one of those titles that gained my interest. It also help that this film has a killer poster art for it. No matter what, I had to check this film out for better or worse.

The film is about a group of friends who get together for a night of partying after one of them finds out that he’s been drafted to the military. They are having fun until a killer named Neo traps everyone in the house. They are forced to play his game as he know every move they make before that make them. Can they survive this night of terror or does Neo exacts his violent hostility towards them.

I liked how “Are We the Waiting” was able to gain my interest from the opening. First, the design of the killer’s mask was one of best designed ones I’ve seen in a low budget slasher film. It also does a very good job with not rushing things like some horror films tend to do.

Most of the reason why I had a very good time with this film was the direction from Michael Taylor Pritt. One of the things that he does well was to make sure that the death scene have an impact. Whether it was the gore that he and his team uses to the way that he directs the killer’s movement, it is done in a way to make the scenes have an intense effect. It made some of the death scene work very well especially at the end of the film. The other thing that Pritt does very well is to make sure the performances including his own are good enough to make the characters interesting. He makes sure that his cast make their characters likeable as there is some dialogue scenes in the beginning to establish the characters. This made the rest of the film work very well.

The screenplay also written by Pritt does a good job establishing the characters. I liked, the way that he spends time in the beginning to establish the story and his characters. It helped set up the rest of the film and it gave some time to get to know the characters before all the chaos ensues. This helped establish the backstory which is something that I personally like. The other thing that I liked a lot was the way that the action moves after the first half the film was over. It moved at a very good pace as there was some very good death scenes that had a bloody feel to them. This helped make this film a fun film to watch.

This was an entertaining slasher that will leave you in shock. With its good directing and intense bloody set pieces, “Are We the Waiting” is bloody fun that will leave a sinister smile on your face.
