Cult Horror Film "Effects" Makes Its Blu-Ray Debut

Ziemba of AGFA and Bleeding Skull and Reversible cover art with illustration by Charles Forsman (Netflix's THE END OF THE FU**ING WORLD).

"Effects" hits retail on August 22nd.

Press Release:

Alamo Drafthouse's American Genre Film Archive, the largest non-profit genre film archive in the world, is excited to announce an August 22, 2017 release date for the EFFECTS Blu-ray.

Cobbled together with loose change by George Romero's friends, EFFECTS is a mesmerizing do-it-yourself horror movie starring Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD), Joe Pilato (DAY OF THE DEAD), and John Harrison (TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE). A group of coked-up filmmakers -- including Savini and Pilato -- gather in Pittsburgh to make a slasher called DUPED: THE SNUFF MOVIE. As filming begins and "accidents" happen, it's clear that something isn't right. And no one can be trusted. Landing somewhere between Michael and Roberta Findlay's SNUFF and a student film by John Carpenter, EFFECTS is a meta-enhanced takedown on the philosophy of horror that doubles as a sleazy and terrifying movie on its own.

"We were blown away to discover that we had the only existing 35mm theatrical print of EFFECTS at the archive," said AGFA director Joe Ziemba. "We're happy that we've been able to help the filmmakers create a new 4K transfer that will be seen by for years to come by audiences who appreciate the movie for the right reasons."

EFFECTS was produced by Harrison (director of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, composer of George Romero's CREEPSHOW and DAY OF THE DEAD), edited and produced by Pasquale Buba (editor of George Romero's KNIGHTRIDERS, CREEPSHOW, DAY OF THE DEAD, and MONKEY SHINES), and written and directed by Dusty Nelson (SAKURA KILLERS). Legendary horror icon Tom Savini also provided the film's visual effects.

"It was a good thing we didn't listen to those who thought we were crazy," said producer and star John Harrison. "EFFECTS was one of those magical moments in one's life when everything just seemed to come together."

To celebrate the release, AGFA teams up with the Alamo Drafthouse's Terror Tuesday series in Austin for a screening of EFFECTS on August 22 with a full cast and crew reunion. Tom Savini, Joe Pilato, John Harrison, Dusty Nelson, Pasquale Buba, and Zilla Clinton will be in attendance.

"To have the film 're-discovered' and appreciated 40 years later, is not only gratifying, but quite frankly, something I never even imagined," said director Nelson. "I can't wait to see it with the audience in Austin."

Controversial Thriller "Del Playa" Debuts on VOD

Terror Films recently released information for the upcoming thriller "Del Playa". The film stars Alan Ayala and Devon Barnes.

"Del Playa" hits VOD on July 21st.

Press Release:

Terror Films is set to release the indie thriller DEL PLAYA across multiple digital platforms in North America on Friday, July 21st.

The film’s story follows Matthew (Alan Ayala), who is routinely abused by his stepfather. He has a crush on Claire (Devon Barnes), during high school. His love for Claire rides a fine line between persistence and obsession. And when, Matthew is jumped by her boyfriend, things turn violent. Five years go by and Claire discovers that her high school stalker has returned for her.

The film has been surrounded by controversy from the moment the filmmakers released a trailer on YouTube in 2015. There were claims made by several people, who saw the trailer, that the movie was based on college student Elliot Rodger. In 2014, Rodger killed six other students and wounded 14 others, in Isla Vista. Then, he killed himself. The controversy became so heated that a petition was created on Change.org by a former UCSB student, garnering approximately 30,000 signatures. The petition was a protest of the film. Meanwhile, major publications such as Variety and The Huffington Post reported on the controversy.

Writer/Director Shaun Hart admits that, while there may be similarities to the actual events that took place in 2013, this story is not based specifically on that incident. “I was completely blindsided by the Elliot Rodger story – another devastating tragedy in a long lineage of mass shootings,” Hart says. “The only difference for me was that I lived on that street where Elliot’s rampage ultimately ended. ”

When asked about his motivations regarding making the film, Hart said: “storytelling is powerful. Being a filmmaker, I began to put the question – why does this keep happening year after year? - into a story because I believe that’s a way that we can learn. We have to come to grips with the fact that – as a society – something is changing. There is a very real darkness descending on our country that is more frightening than any imaginary monster we can manufacture in a horror film. That’s what this film is about.”

As part of his effort to be socially responsible, Hart has decided that a portion of the film’s profits will go to Arts for Humanity! Arts for Humanity! is a non-profit based in Santa Barbara, California. Founded in 1997, this group empowers low income at-risk youth, people with disabilities and the elderly through participatory performing and visual arts programs. They bring opportunities in the creative arts directly to marginalized community members through art programs that are provided to social service agencies through Santa Barbara County.

Terror Films will release the film across multiple digital platforms, in North America. The film will release in the U.S. and Canada. Digital pPlatforms hosting the release include: iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play/You Tube, Sony PSN, X-Box, Vudu, Steam, Vimeo On Demand, Roku (Free Flix Tonight, 24 Hour Movie Channel, Free Grindhouse Flix Tonight), I Bleed Indie, Tubi TV and many others. Automatic Entertainment, the distributor’s official foreign sales partner, will begin introducing the film to foreign buyers at the AFM this November.

"Long Night in a Dead City" Film Review

This is a review that has been sitting on my laptop for a bit but I wanted to talk about it. A couple of weeks ago, yours truly had the chance the world premiere of Richard Griffin’s latest film “Long Night in a Dead City” The screening took place at the Columbus Theater where a part of the film was shot. This is also Griffin’s second to last film as he recently announced the action comedy Strapped for Danger will be his final film.

The film is about a person (Aidan Laliberte) who wakes up in the middle of nowhere on New Year’s Eve. With no memory of what happened to him, he sets out to look for his brother whom he was hanging out with. Along the way, he meets a mysterious woman (Sarah Reed) who leads him down the spiraling path to drugs, sex and murder. Will he be able to find his way out the nightmare before becomes missing forever.

“Long Night in a Dead City” is maybe Richard Griffin’s most dark and surreal film to date. Yes, this is coming from a person that has seen his other surreal and entertaining films “Beyond the Dunwich Horror”, “Exhumed” and “The Disco Exorcist”.

What makes this film very good was Richard Griffin’s direction. He does a very good job pulling off all the surreal aspects that this film has. Whether it’s the way that he directs the action to how his cinematography Nate Sliva captures the images, everything had a David Lynch feel to them. It kept my interested as this is one of those films where the imagery is so surreal in a good way that it makes you interested in the story. The other thing that I liked was the way that Griffin directs his cast. There isn’t much dialogue in the film but he makes sure that the performers make the scenes very haunting. He gets very good performances from his leads Adrian and Sarah Reed. They both made their characters stand out which is needed for the film to succeed. It helped made this one a very surreal one from start to finish.

The screenplay from Lenny Schwartz was good even thought its very surreal. One of the things that I liked about it was the way that he does a good job focusing on his main character. Whether it going to into the state of mind of the main character to minimizing the main character’s dialogue, it makes the character and his journey a surreal and entertaining one. This is what made this character interesting which was definitely needed for this The other thing that makes the screenplay good was the fact that the action keeps everything moving at good pace. It allowed me to digest the basics of everything that was going in the story considering its one of those films where you have to pay attention to everything and not wonder off. If your film is going to be surreal and/or go the David Lynch route make sure it hooks the viewer in so that it allows the viewer to draw their conclusions about what happened and makes them want to rewatch the fil to pick up things that they’ve missed the first time around. This film does that as this story was entertaining and grabs your attention.

I highly suggest you find a way to check this film out as will be hitting the film festival circuit soon. With great direction, very good lead performances and a surreal screenplay, “Long Night in a Dead City” is one film that will take you on surreal trip that you won’t forget.

"Inner Demon" is now available on Shudder.

Press Release:

Terror Films is pleased to announce that Shudder is set to release the award winning, female directed horror film, Inner Demon. The launch begins Monday, July 10! Inner Demon will be available in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland.

Ursula Dabrowsky’s Inner Demon tells the tale of teenager Sam (Sarah Jeavons). She manages to escape, with her young sister, from a deranged serial killer couple (Kerry Anne Reid and Andreas Sobick). Unfortunately, a cabin-in-the-woods, that she hoped would be a safe house, turns out to be even more harrowing and dangerous than her initial entrapment by her captors.

Shot in Australia, Dabrowsky chose the perfect setting in the city of Adelaide. Here, a real-life string of serial killers and demented murders earned it the nickname: “the murder capital of Australia.” She also proves with this disturbingly crafted indie film that dark and twisted thoughts can flow eloquently from the mind of a female filmmaker.

Distributed by Terror Films, Inner Demon played at A Night of Horror International Film Festival. Here, it won “Best Australian Feature,” “Best Australian Director” and “Best Female Performance” for Sarah Jeavons.
