Review: "The Litch"

“The Litch” is the latest film for indie director James Balsamo. He has done such films as “I Spill Your Guts”, “Bite School” and most recently “Killer Waves”. This was one of those films that I been wanting to see for a bit as it looked darker than his other films.

The film is about a wizard who returns from the dead when a thief (James Balsamo) steals the crystal that has kept him imprisoned. Soon, the thief is running for his life as he watches everyone around him get possessed by The Litch. The only way he can defeat him if he can get his head together and find a way to imprisoned for eternity.

Going into “The Litch”, I was hoping that it was going to better than Balsamo’s late film “Killer Wave” which for some weird reason I couldn’t get into. Thankfully, I enjoyed this one as this was a very fun film.

One the things that I liked about James Balasmo’s latest film was his direction. He does a very good job making sure everything is keeping you entertained with the over the top antics. Whether it was the level of gore that is used to some of the film’s fx and animation (yes, I said animation as there is a little that is used here), it gives this a fun and trippy like atmosphere that you help but enjoy this. It helped made some of the scenes watchable some of this films like this tend to go way out there. The other thing that I liked about the direction was the fact that the action was balls to the wall. Everything in the action aspects produced some funny and chaotic moments as this film doesn’t take its self seriously. It added to the fun factor that this film has.

The screenplay written by Balasmo does a very good job with timing the humor. There is a lot of humor in this film but what I liked about it was that it was timed well to allow the horror elements to be the main focal point. It made the humor here work as it didn’t get too dark or too ridiculous that I would shut it off. It’s simple, if you like the kind of humor that are in Lloyd Kaufman’s films then you will like this film.

The last thing that I liked about this film was that it wasn’t serious. Balasmo does a very good job when he’s writing characters that are so weird or writing dialogue so over the top for his character that you can’t help but laugh in a good way as I was enjoying him in this one. There is some funny stuff in his performance that made me enjoy him more as a character than his last film “Killer Waves” as it felt Balasmo was serious with his own character. When he has that goofy funny charm going, his films usually are very funny. See “Bite School for an example of that.

This was a much better film than Balasmo’s last film as I enjoyed this a lot “The Litch” is a very creepy and funny film that will make you not meddle with the dark arts.

Review Rating: Four Stars
