Film Review: "We Are the Flesh"

“We are the Flesh” is the first theatrical release from Arrow Video’s theatrical division Arrow Films here in the U.S. It got my interest because of that and the fact that it was part of last year’s Fantasia International Film Festival where many of the new independent genre film first get noticed.

The film is about a brother and sister (Diego Gamaliel, María Evoli) who stumble upon an abandoned building looking for food and shelter as society is going to hell. They find a deranged man (Noe Hernandez) who befriend them and send them down a spiral that they may never get out of. Stuck in this madman’s world, the two find themselves trapped in a depravity world which makes them do shocking things under his sadistic influence as they slowly lose their humanity.

I’ve seen many films that left me feeling shocked at what I’ve previously seen. Films like “Pieces”, the original “Vampyres” and most of Jess Franco’s work has given me that feeling. You can add “We Are the Flesh” to the list as it might be early in 2017 to make this claim but this was a very shocking film that I’ve seen so far. I couldn’t take my eyes off and there might not be another film that will do that this year.

The reason it’s shocking was its direction from writer/director Emiliano Rocha Minter. One of the things that he does very well is make sure it has a shocking sense a dread throughout. Whether it was the camerawork to some of the film’s very bizarre imagery, everything helped make every scene have a sense of hopelessness and despair. It made me feel very uncomfortable and horrified with watching the images that were on screen. The other thing that makes Minter’s direction work so well was the acting. Minter does a very good job making sure the performances have a demented tone to them. It helped kept my interest the film especially where it was a little slow in the middle. This also has a very good performance from Noe Hernandez as the depraved man behind all of the madness that takes place. The performance helped add to this depraved and shocking film.

Minter’s screenplay is very depraved and has some very shocking moments. Amidst all that, he does a very job focusing each of the main characters decent into madness. He achieves that by creating scenes that are shocking enough that it made me feel uneasy watching this watch. Even though I feel this way, it serves a purpose to the story and the dark imagery that Minter is going for. That’s what makes this film very horrifying and uneasy.

The screenplay was one of those screenplay that had one of those WTF endings. I won’t go into detail about the ending as I don’t like to spoil those films. I’ll just say that the ending caught me off guard but it works. It added more to the shock value of this film as it was something that I didn’t expect.

It’s one of those films that makes you feel so uncomfortable that it makes you want to take a shower after watching. This is not for everyone. Even thinking that, this film achieves in creating a horrific atmosphere that leaves you in shock. It’s early but I have a feeling that “We are the Flesh” will be the most shocking and depraved film that I’ll see all year.

“We are the Flesh” is currently in limited release and hits DVD & Blu-Ray and Feburary 14th.

Film Review: Party Night

Before I go into my review, I want to disclose that I was a backer of the film’s Kickstarter campaign and part of the Fright Meter Films’ sister company Fright Meter Awards which is an awards committee that nominates the best in horror. This is my objective opinion on “Party Night”. Figured that I get that out of the way before I start my review.

“Party Night” is about a group of kids who throw an after party after enjoying their senior prom at a house in the woods. They’re having a fun time making love, playing cards and having fun. All of this comes to an abrupt end when a psychopath begins to stalling and killing them. Soon, they are going to wish that they went straight home, as he is out to ruin their fun night.

This is a film that I’ve been looking forward to as the premise had an 80’s vibe in the way of films like “Prom Night” and “The Mutilator” which were very good film. I thought this would be a homage to those films and be good at the same time. I never thought it would have an intense feel like “Party Night” has.

This film is very good because of its direction from first time writer/director Troy Escamilla. He does a very good job making sure the film has an intense feel. Whether it’s the way that he approaches everything to making sure the film has an 80’s slasher feel with the gore, everything is done in a way that it makes it both terrifying and fun. It helped made this an enjoyable film. The other thing that Escamilla does well is to make sure the performances are good. He makes sure that the cast gel with each one another as it made that performance aspect work well as these characters were likeable and not annoying. He gets a good lead performance from first time actress Lauren Toupal and good supporting performances from Ryan Poole, Tommie Vegas and Destine Orndoff. The performances help make this entertaining for me.

The screenplay also written by Escamilla does a very good job with building the characters. By doing that, it allows the film not to move at a fast pace and allows for you to become interested in the characters. This also provides some good build up to the film’s many death scenes. The other thing that I liked about it was the fact the death scenes had a punch to them. They were done well as it had some good kills and makes sure it delivered on the gore like an eighties slasher film.

If there was one problem that I had with was this, it had to do with the running time. The film clocks in at seventy minutes and I felt like I wanted a little more as I was enjoying this film and thought it could’ve gone for another ten or fifteen minutes somewhere in the third act. It’s a minor grip with this film, as I like films to be at least eighty minutes long unless the short running time fits perfect with the story. Still, I liked this film a lot.

This is a film that you should definitely check out when it get released as I had a fun time with this film. With its good directing and fun time, “Party Night” is one party to die for.

Film Review: "Never Open the Door"

When I first heard about “Never Open the Door”, I was interested because it looked interesting and the fact that it was shot in black and white instead of color. It also helped that poster for the blu-ray looked creepy.

The film is about three couples who are getting together with each other and having Thanksgiving dinner in a remote cabin. Their peaceful fun is interrupted when a wounded stranger shows up. After he ends up dead, strange and terrifying events start happening to them. It pits each of them against one another as they look for a way out. Can they find a way out of this madness before it’s too late? The film stars Jessica Sonneborn, Mike Wood, Deborah Venegas and Matthew Aidan.

Wow, this felt like an episode of The Twilight Zone with the blood and gore. I liked this a lot as this felt different from what I’ve seen lately. First, this film was short which is in this case was a good thing because it takes place in one place. Also, this was intense and creepy film from start to finish.

This film succeeds because of its direction from Vito Trabucco. One of the things that I liked about this was the fact that he goes for the black and white approach instead or color in the way the film looks. It gives the film both a retro feel and allowed the creepiness to be fleshed out even more. It gives the film a certain uniqueness that makes this feel different from other films that take place in one setting. The other thing that Trabucco does very well is to make sure that performances work. Whether it’s the way he directs his cast to how well they gelled well together, it kept me interested as I was trying to figure what is happening to them. It made it a very interesting and different film from other horror releases.

The other thing that makes it good was its screenplay. The screenplay written by Trabucco and Christopher Maltauro allows the atmosphere to bring in the level of dread to make the story scary. Whether it’s the way they approach the story to the film’s intense scenes, it had a level of intensity that kept me interested in the action and story. The other thing that they do so well here is to really make sure the story is creepy. Whether it’s the situation that the characters are in to the film’s ending, everything kept me on edge. When you have a screenplay that grabs you like this film did, then you’re doing something right in making everything feel shocking and creepy.

This is a film that you should go out of your way and check out, if you’re a fan of “The Twilight Zone”, as this film has that kind of vibe. Whether it was Vito Trabucco’s directing or the film’s creepy tone, this film make you think twice about opening the door.

Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month: January 2017 - Jessica Sonneborn

Jessica Sonneborn is an actress that has appeared in horror films such horror films as "Bloody Bloody Bible Camp", "The Haunting of Alice D" and most recently "Never Open the Door". She is our Horror Chamber's Screen Queen of the Month for January 2017.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Connecticut, but live in Los Angeles now.

What made you get into horror acting?

I’ve always been a big ham, but I got a lot of my inspiration from my Dad who is a film historian. I didn’t go to acting or film school, so my education has been on set. I started auditioning when I lived in Boston and many of the first projects I booked were horror films. I caught the bug from there.

Favorite Horror Film:

Every one I’ve been in. 😊 I would have to say The Shining and The Orphanage.

Favorite Horror Character:

This is a tough one. I’m really old school in my taste, so I’ll have to go with Norman Bates.

Favorite Horror Director:

I love and respect so many of them, but I’d have to go with Carpenter. His movies are so much fun.

Favorite Horror TV or Film Series:

Favorite Horror Scream Queen:

I keep wondering if I should answer with an old school SQ or someone I’ve worked with, because I truly have many favorites. 😊

Jamie Lee Curtis for old school and Augie Duke for who I’ve worked with. Augie and I have done several projects together, including our latest, Wild Boar. Her and I have WAY too much fun together. 😊

Advice for people trying to make it in the Horror Business:

I always say if you want to try it, volunteer to work or act on a short film. After 12 hours, covered in blood, cold and dirty, if you’re still smiling… you may have found the right business to play in.
