Terror Invades the Smallest State: A Look Back at Terror Con 2017

Terror Con is a horror convention out of the Rhode Island area where I’m located at. The show recently wrapped up their second convention this past weekend. I say second convention instead of second year is because the show was on hiatus for two and half years. Thankfully, it has come back as it was a great time and way better than the first one back in June 2014.

When I first walked into the convention hall, I had the feeling of excitement. It was nice going to a horror convention where I didn’t have to get a hotel room. he first thing that I did was to take a look at the horror themed funkos that one of the vendors had as I’m big into funkos especially the horror ones. I ended up getting a couple including the Barb “Stranger Things” one, as I’m a big fan of the show. Then decided to stop by the Vinegar Syndrome booth which I always do whenever I’m at a convention where they are also in attendance. Their representative was very nice. I picked up four titles including their recent ones “Don’t Answer the Phone” and “Slaughterhouse”. After visiting the booth, I decided to walk around and take pictures of the nice displays like the car from “Christine” and a “Hellrasier” display with the room in the open and the box from the second film I believe. Once the guests started to arrive, I started by visiting and getting autographs Tyler Mane and Scout Taylor Compton from the two Rob Zombie “Halloween” films. Then continued by getting all the Clive Barker related guests that were at the convention. First, it was Nightbreed’s Christina McCorkindale then it was on to the main reason why I was excited about this convention is to meet and get autographs from the cenobites from my one of my favorite horror sequels “Hellbound Hellraiser 2” minus Doug Bradley as he wasn’t a guest at this con. I met and got autographs from Simon Bramford, Barbie Wilde and Nicholas Vince. Then it was onto the panels as I took in Bill Diamond’s panel , The Walking Dead panel, Hellrasier panel and Slasher panel with Sid Haig, Kane Hooder, David Naughton, R.A. Manhoff and Robert Bryant Wilson all one after another. After that, it was time to call it for day 1.

Day two started with me meeting the legend Sid Haig. Got my DVD of “The Devil’s Rejects” signed then got my picture taken even though screwed up the pose a couple of time. LOL. Then it was on to “The Nightmare before Christmas” panel which was very good and it was nice getting insight on how the process of the film was made as i'm a big fan of the film. Then it was on to meeting John Kasier who is known as the voice of the Cryptkeeper on “Tales from the Crypt. One of the nicest guests I met at Terror Con. Then it was onto “Malcolm McDowell: Live on Stage”. That was a fun panel as it was Malcolm McDowell being Malcolm McDowell. It was one of my favorite highlights at the convention. If that wasn’t enough fun, the next panel “Rob Zombie’s Halloween: Ten Years Later” was even more fun as Tyler Mane and Scout Taylor Compton talked about the making of the film along with some funny moments with the two fooling around telling stories that happened on set. It along with the Malcolm McDowell panel really made the afternoon so fun. Then it was back to the convention hall for one final time as I manage to meet and get an autograph and picture with David Naughton from “An American Werewolf in London”. Then I stopped by Ming Chen (AMC’s Comic Book Men) booth from to get a picture and let me tell you he’s a very nice guy and did a great job with The Walking Dead, The Nightmare before Christmas, Malcolm McDowell and Rob Zombie’s Halloween panels. Then it was back to the horror chamber as that convention came to an end.

Some quick thoughts about the convention experience. I thought it was a very good one as Altered Reality Entertainment and the Rhode Island Convention Center did a very good job. I liked how everything was on one floor, everything was accessible, the vendors were good, and the guests were nice and there was no problems with another event that took place next to the convention. I had no problems moving around from one place to the next as the space was big enough for the flow of traffic to move smoothly. The attendance from my perspective looked better than I expected for a convention coming back from hiatus. Everything was well organized from the panels to the lines. It’s definitely a convention that I would go back to.

The only negative that I have was the fact that there was no film festival. This is the second straight horror convention that I went to where there was no film festival. I wish these would come back as it helps get some buzz to the smaller films that are looking for distribution.

Overall, I had a great time with Terror Con. I hope it’s not another two and a half years before the next one. I think if Altered Reality Entertainment treats this convention like they treat their main show Rhode Island Comic Con, I truly think this could be on the level of a Rock and Shock or Chiller Theatre Convention.

Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month: February 2017 - Ashley Mary Nunes

Ashley Mary Nunes is an up and coming actress who first gained notice last year when she starred in the Christmas horror film "All Through the House" and has made an appearance in 2012 film Inhuman Resources which was apart of the Fangoria Presents line. She is also The Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month for February 2017.

Where are you from?

I am originally from the Bay Area (Benicia, CA). But, mostly grew up in Vacaville, CA.

What made you get into acting and working in the horror genre?

I was born and raised into the horror genre. My older brother, Todd Nunes (writer/director of All Through The House) was obsessed with the genre growing up. He would film his own VHS horror movies with his friends and even did Friday the 13th and Halloween as stage plays when he was in High School. I was always included. If I had to be a creepy stuff animal that comes to life or a little demon, I was the to go to kid. I was never censored from horror movies growing up. I guess you can say that my brother was training me to be a Scream Queen from the day I was born.

Favorite Horror Film:

My number one horror movie will always be John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. The opening sequence still captivates me to this day. I am a huge fan of the continuous shot of young Michael's POV. If I see it playing on TV, I always stop everything just to finish it.

Favorite Horror Character:

I would have to say that my favorite Horror Character is Chucky. Child’s Play hit home for me when it first debuted. I had my own real life “killer” doll named Chubbykins. Todd brought this doll to life and gave it its own persona and creepy voice before Chucky was even in the picture. This doll forced me to long jump to my bed every night and sleep with the lights on. It really affected my childhood, but it a good creepy way.

Favorite Horror Director:

Besides my talented brother, Todd Nunes, I would have to go with John Carpenter. Oh man, would I love to work with him. He worked extremely hard to get to where he his is today. I see a lot of John Carpenter in my brother, Todd. Maybe one of these days you’ll see some great early cult classics of Todd’s.

Favorite Horror TV or Film Series:

I would have to say that my overall favorite Horror Film Series is, SCREAM. There was something very special about experiencing SCREAM in the theaters while growing up. I really connected to it because I could relate to the main character, Sidney Prescott.

Favorite Horror Scream Queen:

I grew up admiring Jamie Lee Curtis and knew from a young age that I wanted to be just like her. She is just so very talented. She's more than a Scream Queen. She's one of those actors that can transform into anyone and really sell it. She's also hilarious and has great comedic timing. I also love that she cosplays with her son at conventions. Advice for people trying to make it in the Horror Business: May be a bit cliché, but really, NEVER give up! And learn to ignore the trolls. Trolls hide behind a computer and are really FANS of your work. If anyone takes time out of their day to comment, whether it be positive or negative, love or hate, they are your fans. Don’t ever let anyone bring you down. If this is what you truly love doing, keep pushing!

Any Upcoming or Current Projects:

Yes, I have a few projects set to film later this year. I am currently working alongside my brother,Todd on our next horror feature, “Death Ward 13”. It is a reimagining of the 70’s cult classic, “Don’t Look In The Basement”. I can’t say what my role in this film is, but I can say that I am the model on the poster. I am very excited to be working with Todd again. I am also very psyched to be working with director, Nicholas Hunt on his horror feature, “Safe Place” and directors Andrew Cain and Jimmy Wienholz on their horror project, “Sammy”. I am very passionate able these films and can't wait to start filming.

And you can now buy and rent my Christmas Slasher, “All Through The House”, directed by Todd Nunes from Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and all major VOD platforms.

Review: "Reel Nightmare"

“Reel Nightmare” is one of those films that I stumbled on through Facebook and thought it had a cool poster. Plus, the film has an H.P Lovecraft vibe to it. So, I decided to check this one out as part its limited run on Amazon Prime.

The film is about a group of friends who investigate a haunting at the house that belonged to a coven of witches for a student film. When one of them awakens them by using the Necronomicon, the witches exact their vengeances on those who disturb them. Soon the witches are out to kill anyone who disturbs them and put an end to their film.

This was one of those film where I was thinking it was going to head south into bad movie territory. In the beginning, I felt like it was going to a found footage film with the introduction playing the way it did only find out that it didn’t feel like a found footage film at all. This kind of bummed me out as I was kind of the expecting it but I still liked “Reel Nightmare” a lot.

One of the reasons that this works very well was the fact that Armand Petri’s direction was good. I liked how he’s able to make everything but the found footage aspect work. Whether it was the gore effects to the way the he and his crew made the supernatural effect works, it provided a couple of tense and bloody moments. The other thing that Petri does well with the direction is to make sure the lead performances are good enough to make this entertaining. He makes sure that there is chemistry between the cast as this is one of those films that goes half way in before any action takes place. By making sure the performances works, it made the first interesting enough to keep my interest.

The screenplay also written by Petri was good minus the fact this didn’t feel like a found footage film. He does a good job setting up his characters as he spends time developing them. It helped later on in the film as I was into the characters when the action takes place. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the fact that it built tension into the story. It was a key factor in the last half of the film as everything felt intense and I was into the characters. It made up for the fact that the found footage aspect doesn’t work.

“Reel Nightmare” works very well as a straight up horror than the found footage that it was going for. Still, this is a film worth checking out as it has some good bloody moments and good acting.

Review Rating: Three and a Half Stars

The Horror Chamber's 2017 Terror Con Preview

Terror Con is a my local horror convention that is based in Rhode Island that will be holding its convention on February 25th and 26th at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI. The convention comes back after a two and a half year absence.

Let me say, this lineup blow the 2014 lineup out of the water. The headliners for the convention are Malcolm McDowell (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, A Clockwork Orange), Dennis O’ Hara (American Horror Story), Sid Haig (The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses) and “The Walking Dead’s Khary Payton (King Ezekel), Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel Stokes) and Michael Cudlitz (Abraham).

Don’t get turned off by the way they emphasize The Walking Dead at this convention as they're bringing in six guests including the three headliners that I just mentioned along with Ann Mahoney, Elizabeth Ludlow and Jeremy Palko joining them.

The main thing that I liked about this is that there is more of focus of horror films and horror reunions than back in 2014. The reunions includes Rob Zombie’s Halloween reunion as Tyler Mane and Scout Taylor Compton join McDowell as guests announced, Hellbound Hellrasier 2 cenobites reunion with Barbie Wilde, Simon Bamford and Nicholas Vince, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3” reunion with R.A. Mihailoff and Kate Hodge and The Nightmare Before Christmas reunion with Chris Sarandon and Ken Page.

Other guests coming to Terror Con includes Kane Hodder (Jason X, Hatchet), John Kassir (Tales From the Crypt) Christine McCorkindale (Nightbreed), David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London), Robert Brian Wilson (Silent Night, Deadly Night), Megadeth co-founder and bassist David Ellefson, Danny Lloyd (The Shining) and Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Escape From New York).

The show will also have some great panels including The Walking Dead: Stories from the Apocalypse with Michael Cudlitz (Sgt. Abraham), Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel), Khary Payton (Ezekiel), Ann Mahoney (Olivia), Elizabeth Ludlow (Arat), and Jeremy Palko (Andy). Centobites Panel with Barbie Wilde, Simon Bamford and Nicholas Vince, Classic Horror Icons: Meet the Slashers with Kane Hodder (Jason X, Hatchet), Sid Haig (The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses), Mihailoff (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3), David Naughton (American Werewolf of London) and Brian Wilson (Silent Night, Deadly Night), Malcolm McDowell: Live on Stage and Halloween: 10 Years Later with Tyler Mane and Scout Taylor Compton are all the main panels at Terror Con.

The show will also be selling the first issue of New England Tales of Terror which is being released by their sister company Altered Reality Comics. The issue features cover art by Ralph Reese, Joe St.Pierre and Ian Chase Nichols with interiors by Ian Chase Nichols,Rich Woodall, Chris Campana and Jay Kennedy. This lineup on paper is a great lineup as I will be there since it’s in my area. I really hope this convention does well as it would be great to have a horror convention every year in my backyard.

Terror Con takes places on February 25th and 26th at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI.

For more information on this convention, you can visit the convention’s official website at: http://www.theterrorcon.com

Charles Band's "The Creeps" Makes its Blu-Ray Debut

Full Moon Features recently send us information for the upcoming release of Charles Band's "The Creeps". The film stars Phil Fondacaro (Troll, Land of the Dead) and features cinematography from Adolfo Bartoli (Pit and the Pendulum) and practical make-up by Gabe Bartalos (From Beyond, Basket Case 2).

Special features on the blu-ray includes original Full Moon trailers and a vintage THE CREEPS Videozone behind-the-scenes featurette.

"The Creeps" will be available on February 21st.

Press Release:

Undersized, Undead and Angry.

Dracula. Frankenstein. The Werewolf. The Mummy. In an experiment of the maddest kind of science, these four classic monsters of film and literature are brought back to life…cut something goes wrong. Though the look and act exactly as they you’d think they’d look, the creepy quartet emerge as half their normal size. Now, they're three feet tall…and not happy at all.

From Full Moon founder, producer and director Charles Band, comes 1997’s THE CREEPS (aka DEFORMED MONSTERS), one of the studios most beloved and requested titles. Originally filmed and exhibited in 3D, this new Blu-ray is culled from the original negative and presented in a stunning anamorphic, 2D HD 1080p transfer, all the better to appreciate Adolfo (Stuart Gordon’s PIT AND THE PENDULUM) Bartoli’s rich 35mm cinematography and Gabe (FROM BEYOND, BASKET CASE 2) Bartalos’ amazing practical make-up FX.

Filled with humor, horror, wit, style, sleaze and silliness, THE CREEPS also offers one of legendary diminutive actor Phil (TROLL, LAND OF THE DEAD) Fondacaro’s greatest roles as Count Dracula, one of the most effective – and underrated – portrayals of the vampire in horror film history.
