Review: Headless

“Headless” is a film that is being dubbed as a lost slasher horror film from 1978. It was first noticed in the film “Found”, as one of the main characters in the film was obsessing over the film. The footage in the film within a film that made me wish “Headless” would become a feature. When I looking at what upcoming projects that director Scott Schirmer after watching “Found”, I was surprised to see that this was one of the films that he was producing. I knew then that I had to check this out.

The film is about a masked killer (Shane Beasley) who has no regard for anything. He goes on a violent spree that includes slaughter, eating his victims and necrophilia. But his past starts to haunt him in a way that he never imagines. This leads him to become more violently aggressive as he stalks a young woman and everyone one around her. Can his madness be stopped before he goes to a greater depth of insanity and violence than ever before? The film also stars Kelsey Carlisle, Ellie Church, Dave Parker, Kaden Miller, Jennifer Lee and Haley Madison.

One of the things that makes Arthur Cullipher’s direction work so well was the way that he makes the film’s tone very dark. From the way that he makes the film look like a lost seventies slasher film to how he uses the creepy music, it helped make the shocking violence feel horrific instead of it feeling all cartoonish like most films in this subgenre. It made the death scenes feel very shocking and uneasy to watch. Something that you need in a film like this to get over the fact that this is going to be bleak and horrific. The other thing that Cullipher does very well is to make sure he gets the performances that he needs to make this work. He does a very good job making sure that the performances had a serious tone to it. Whether it way that he directs his cast to the killer’s movements, everything had a dark tone to it. It helped make this film very shocking to watch.

Speaking of the acting, I thought it was very good. Shane Beasley does a very good job making his character very menacing. From the way that he moves to how he approaches his character, he makes his characters very terrifying. The films also has good performances from Kelsey Carlisle and Ellie Church. The dynamic between the two were very good and helped with the overall flow of the film. I hope to see both of them in more films in the near future.

The screenplay written by Nathan Erdel does a great job with character development and handling the violence. I liked the way he explores the main character. From the film’s flashback sequences to how it makes the character insane, it develops the character’s mental state on mind. If this didn’t have that kind of development, this would’ve felt like another slasher film. The other thing that I liked about Erdel's screenplay was the way it makes the violence shocking. From the way it was created on the page to the way it was executed, it had a level of shock value that leaves you feeling horrified and turning away from the screen. That’s what makes the violence in the film very effective.

This was a very shocking throwback grindhouse film that leaves you terrified. “Headless” is a shocking and terrifying film that will haunt you.

Review Rating: Four Stars.

Review: "Blood Ransom"

It was around Halloween season last year when I came across the trailer for “Blood Ransom”. It was one of those indie horror/fantasy films that gained my interest almost instantly because it had a love story that looked very dark and it was a vampire film. When those two elements come together, I’m always interested in that type of horror film.

The film follows, Crystal (Anne Curtis), a woman who recently turned into a vampire. She has only seven days to find someone to kill before she dies an agonizing death. She starts to have feelings for her driver (Alexander Dreymon) who she wants to kill. But her humanity sets in, as she starts to fall for him. But the only thing that threatens their relationship, is the fact the he doesn’t know that she’ll die unless she kills.

Going into this film, I was expecting this to be a very Gothic vampire film in the vain of “We Are the Night” and “Interview for A Vampire”. For the most part it goes a great job delivering on those aspects. But what makes this film very good was it delivers on the bloody violence while making the film feel like a dark fantasy with the way the romantic elements were used well.

One of the thing that make this film very good was writer/director Francis dela Torre’s direction. One of things that makes his direction stand out was the way the film looked from start to finish. From how the vampires look from the makeup to how each of the scenes was constructed, everything help gave this film its dark and dreary look and tone throughout. It really made this film feel like a true vampire film without needing the aspects that is associated with a Hollywood film.

The other thing that makes his direction good was the way that he gets the performances that he needs for this to work. Dela Torre does a very good job making sure his cast makes their performances fit the film’s tone. It’s crucial for this to happen and to be on a certain note so the tone of the film doesn’t go into a different direction.

Dela Torre also gets a very good performances from Anna Curtis, who is stunning as the film’s lead character. She does a great job making her character very dark throughout the film. Wither it was the way that she interacts with her costars to giving her character this Gothic tone, it makes the character stand out and keeps you interested in the character.

The screenplay which also written by dela Torre was different from what I expected but it was also good at the same time. What makes it good was the fact that he does a good job not leaving any questions or holes in the story. I liked, the way that he uses his prologue to the story up. By describing what happened in text before the film begin, it doesn’t give me the feeling that I’ve entered the film midway and wondering how it got to that point in the beginning. It was smart to do that as I’m not left wondering how the main character turned into a vampire. Also, I liked how this film had a film-noir feel with the detective’s subplot. It gave another perspective of the film through a character who’s isn’t in the middle of most of the action. Through the character’s narration to his relationship with the driver, it helped moved the story along and it made the character interesting and have a purpose in this film.

The film also does a very good job blending in various elements in the film’s story. It’s what helped me become very engaged with this film. Whether it’s the bloody violence, to the dark aspects, to the romantic elements, dela Torre does a very good job making these elements work with the film’s story. It’s what makes this screenplay good and Gothic.

I hope this film is able to find some sort of distribution here in the U.S. I truly think vampire fans will love this film for all the Gothic and romantic elements. “Blood Ransom” is a very bloody and Gothic film that delivers on the gore and the romance.

The Soska Sisters Set to Take the World of Graphic Novels by Storm with "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack!"

Anthony T's Horror Chamber is more than horror films as we look for everything that relates to horror.

Case in point, we recently received a press release and three pages from Twisted Twins Productions for their new graphic novel project "Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack". The project is has currently raised $24,800. They're looking to raise at least $30,000 by May 8th for the project to be fully funded. Here's our story!

Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attack! is an original graphic novel presented in a grindhouse/exploitation film style. It’s irreverent and raw but, at the same time, it’s a story–an actual story with a beginning, middle and end–that’s infused with relevant social commentary.

The story centers upon Purvis Gunt, a malcontent and pervert who works at a pharmaceutical lab. Purvis is obsessed with having rampant, porno-style sex with nearly every woman he sees but it’s never gonna happen for him because, in addition to the fact that he’s married, he’s revolting in every possible way. So he turns to science for a way to cheat the situation, using the resources of the pharmaceutical lab to create something that will cause women to lose any and all inhibition or restraint and fill them with uncontrollable lust. Purvis, however, is a terrible scientist. What he cooks up is a virus that fills women with not only a lust for sex…but for blood!

When the virus gets out and infects the female population of the small town where Purvis lives, carnage ensues and it’s up to Purvis, disgraced priest Father Osorio and super macho but sexually ambiguous SWAT officer Mack Diesel to contain the situation before woman-hating US President Pole drops a nuke on the whole goddamn mess!

"Darkside Witches" hits retail on April 7th.

Plot Synopsis:

Six innocent women in Northern Italy were found guilty of witchcraft and burned at the stake during the Holy Inquisition. Satan’s servant proposes to them the opportunity to avenge the injustice in exchange for their becoming his eternal immortal slaves. Review: "All Sinners Night'

“All Sinners Night” is the latest release from World Wide Multi Media. It’s also was one of the films that I was looking forward to when they recently send me a package with the latest releases.

Halloween marks a sad time in Lana Williams’ (Brittney Jessee) life. Her brother mysteriously disappears a year ago. Even though he’s consider dead by everyone a year later, she is very obsessed with finding him. She comes in contact with David (Tom Sparx), a reporter whose wife killed herself on the same day also. He believes these occurrences are linked to a satanic cult. The two travel to a small town in Indiana to find the truth. They discover a cult that is out to kidnap and sacrifice five victims. How far are they both willing to go to find out the shocking truth and what evil that this cult has planned? The film features a cameo from John Duggan (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

“When I heard “All Sinners Night was like “The Purge” or “The Strangers”, I didn’t know what to expect. I haven’t seen “The Purge” or “The Strangers” prior to this but the film’s trailer sold me on this film. Thankfully this was a good choice, as this is one creepy occult film.

“All Sinners Night” for the most part was a good film, as it got better as it went along. One of thing that was good was Bobby Easley’s direction. From the way some of the scenes were shot to the selection of the film’s music, everything helped keep my interested with the story. It was nice to have this feeling watching this film because the film looked like it was shot very cheaply. The other thing that makes his direction good was the fact the performances weren’t too over the top or bad. There were times in the film that the acting felt bad especially in the beginning. It felt like there was a little of overacting as this could’ve been unbearable to watch but Easley makes sure it doesn’t happen for the entire film. The acting got better as the film went along, as the main antagonists started to become more frightening especially in the end of the film.

Easley’s screenplay was a little better than the directing. The screenplay does a good job making sure the film has its creepy and very dark tone throughout. It’s what kept me being interested in the film when the acting was bad in the beginning. The other thing that I liked about this was the way that he comes up with some of the film’s death scenes. Those scenes had a level of shock value that was needed to keep the film’s dark tone. If those scenes felt like something out of a random slasher film then this would’ve made this film unbearable. Thankfully it’s not, as it adds to the film’s dark and sinister tone.

The only complaint that I have with the screenplay was that there wasn’t much character development. It would have been nice to see some with the main characters, but this is the only grip that I have with screenplay.

“All Sinners Night” is a creepy occult film that manages to hit the mark most of the time and miss on other. I’ve seen worse, but this is worth a rental if you’re into those kind of films.

Review Rating: Three Skulls.
