Return to Return to Nuke Em' High: Blu-Ray Review

This is the second part of Lloyd Kaufman’s “Return to Nuke Em High. Yes, I did a video review of this film late last year but finally after waiting what feels like ten or twenty years, I managed to finally got the chance to pick up the blu-ray “Return to Return to Nuke Em High” to give it the full blu-ray review.

The film picks up where the first film left where the two lovers Crissy and Lauren are forced to finally confront the evil CEO of Tromaganic Foodstuff Conglomerate. If that wasn’t worse Crissy gives birth to a half duck/ half human and the Cretins formally the glee club is terrorizing Tromavile High School. Yes, this is the plot for this film. Can Crissy and Lauren stop the cretins and Tromaganic Foodstuff Conglomerate in this explosive final part to “Return to Nuke Em’ High”.

After seeing this film separately as its own film compared to watching both parts back to back, I can firmly say “Return to Return Nuke Em’ High aka vol 2” is a stepdown from Vol 1. Still, it’s a good film but I was hoping more of the same as the first film but this felt different and it felt like Lloyd was getting in the way of the story of the first film.

Kaufman’s direction was as good as the first film. He does a good job making sure the film moves at a good pace even when there is an annoying gag in the film which I’ll get into in the screenplay portion that slows it down only. The action came off as chaotic which is what makes Kaufman’s films always fun to watch as I had fun with this film.

He also does a good making sure the acting is good enough to keep you having fun watching this film even though the screenplay has flaws. Both Catherine Corcoran and Asta Paredes are very good in the film and I also enjoy Lloyd performance even though there was too much of him in this film.

The screenplay written by Kaufman, Travis Campbell, Derek Dressler and Gabriel Feidman was the film’s weak point. One of the problems that I had with this film was all the Talking Tromaville cut ins. I felt it was annoying after the second time. I get the joke but I don’t like being hit in the head with the same joke too many times. It slows the film down and it’s something I don’t like in comedies because it becomes repetitive. It hurts the momentum of the film. The other thing that I didn’t like was it focuses on Lloyd’s character too much. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lloyd Kaufman but I think his character takes up much time in the story with the whole retconning of “Class of Nuke Em’ High” to him having too much screen time that it loses focus on the two main characters Chrissy and Lauren.

There was also some good things in the screenplay. The screenplay does a great job breaking the fourth wall a couple of times with an editing room scene fight plus a scene changing from dialogue to director’s commentary. Both of those scenes are the funniest scenes in this film and felt different and inventive. The film also does a very good job making sure the action had an intense and gory feel to it that you’ll have a fun time enjoying this film and forgive the film’s screenplay miscues.

Like every Lloyd Kaufman film, the blu-ray is loaded. The extras on the first disc features a very funny introduction to the film, short films including the weirdly entertaining Mr. Topps, Merry Christmas to My Wife’s Butt and Radiation March and trailers for Return to Nuke Em High vol 1&2, Troma Now and Lloyd Kaufman’s upcoming film Shakespeare Shitstorm.

Disc 2 is as loaded. The disc starts off with the documentary 2 Girls, 1 Duck. This is a feature length documentaon the making of the film. This is usually the best part of a Lloyd Kaufman film on blu-ray as this documentary gives you an all access look in the making “Return to Nuke Em High” Volumes 1 and 2. It’s a very good look at how an independent film is made as it’s not all glitz and glamour. You get to see how hard it is to make two films at once. It’s definitely worth checking out if you ever want to know what it takes to direct and produce an indie horror film. The only thing that was missing was the audio commentary which would also been nice to have on this disc.
After that there is two very good featurettes Make Your Own Shower Scene and Make Your Own Green Screen in a Bentley. Both of those featurettes can be very helpful if you’re a filmmaker looking to cut corners in making your indie horror film. Beside those, you also have the short documentary From Festival to Fascism and TroMoMA Vol 1. Honored at the MoMA, NY and tributes to Stan Lee, Lemmy and Joe Fleshaker.

This is a step down from Return to Nuke Em’ High but “Return to Return to Nuke Em High has enough good action and solid lead performances that makes this film fun given its flaws.

Film Review: Haunt

J

It seems like every Halloween Season, you get a horror film that takes place on Halloween. “Haunt” is a film that surprising hasn’t been getting much buzz since the film is directed and written by 2 of writers of the box office hit “A Quiet Place” and the film being produced by Eli Roth. The film is about a group of friends who go out to the club on Halloween Night. They find a flyer for a haunted house that would scare you to the bone. Once entering the house, they realize that this isn’t an ordinary haunted house as there is a group of killers looking make their nightmares and last moments a living hell as they are trapped with no escape. The film stars Katie Stevens and Damien Meffei.

It amazes me that every year when we get close to Halloween, there is a Halloween film that needs to be talked about in a very good way. A couple years ago, it was Justin Seaman’s indie Halloween horror film “The Barn”. Then last year another Halloween horror film that came out of nowhere to big a mega cult hit Terrifier. Now, you can add “Haunt” to the list of very good Halloween horror films that have come out lately.

The reason why this film is very good was the writing and directing from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. One of the things that I liked about the direction is that they did a great job with the way they directed the action. This could have been one of those run of the mill haunted house film where there are some lags and boring moments but this film doesn’t because the action is intense and I liked the set designs in the film as it had that gloom and doom feel as it makes some of the intense scenes very gripping.

Beck and Woods also does a very good job in making sure that the acting in this film matches the intense action. The directors make sure their cast does a very good job with the way they approach each of their characters. It helped make this film feel like you’re on a thrill ride. Speaking of the performances, I liked how Beck and Woods did a very good job directing the villains in the film. From the movements to how each of the villainous characters deliver their dialogue, it made their characters feel scary and frightening. When that happens, it makes horror aspects work as you’re into the film and their performances.

The film also has a strong lead performance from Katie Stevens. She does a very good job with the way she portrays the film’s lead. Whether the story focused on the backstory of her character or whether she tries to escape the haunted house, she makes sure that it’s convincing enough that you’re drawn to the character. The performance is another thing that makes this film very entertaining and would love to see in more horror film as a lead actress.

The screenplay written by Beck and Woods was a thrill ride from start to finish. I liked how they allow the tension and claustrophobia to build up for the first half of the film. It allowed time to develop the main character and made the action later on in the film work so well. That is what makes horror films enjoyable to watch. Another thing that I liked about the screenplay was the fact they did a good job with the way that they spaced everything out. The story moved at a very good pace as it takes it time developing everything. Whether it was the kill scenes to some of the main character’s backstory, everything is spaced out very well that I could sit and enjoy this film right up to its kick ass conclusion.

It seems the last couple of years have produced some very good Halloween themed horror film that are worth seeing every Halloween season as “Haunt” is no different. With its intense action and creepy villains, “Haunt” will be on my Halloween viewing list for years to come. I hate to give back to back five star reviews as I did with “Ready of Not" but I enjoyed “Haunt" a lot and its highly recommend viewing for this Halloween season.

Review Rating: Five Stars.

Film Review: "Ready or Not"

Hell has frozen over. I’m going back writing horror film reviews exclusively for this site. It’s been a while since the last review I’ve written, the abysmal “St Agatha”. I’ve been doing reviews for the podcast lately for The Indie Roundup on the podcast where I review a horror short and feature film on the film festival circuit. But after coming out of the screening of “Ready or Not”, I’m not going to film a reaction video but return to writing reviews here on the podcast’s official site as I want to expand Anthony T’s Horror Show to be more than just a podcast as if you follow social media pages, I tend post regularly on Facebook and Instagram and put more emphasis on the site.

“Ready or Not” follows a bride (Samara Weaving) who marries into a wealthy family. After getting married she joins the family in a traditional game when someone new enter the family. She is forced to draw a card and the card comes out Hide and Seek. What she doesn’t know, the game she is playing is a game where the family is armed with weapons to hunt her down and she has nothing to defend herself. Can she survive the night before she becomes the family’s latest victim? The film co-stars Adam Brody Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell.

Going into this film, I liked the trailer so much that I was anticipating this film after the trailer ended. That usually doesn’t happen for me for an original Hollywood horror film as I need to see a trailer or two to get me excited for an original Hollywood horror film. This film didn’t let me down as this one of those films that will have a following for years to come.

One of the main reasons why “Ready or Not” is a great horror comedy is the direction by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who are known by the duo Radio Silence. One of the things that they did very well was the way they directed the action. The action in the film is great. Everything is timed well and gives you an intense and chaotic feel that isn’t seen much in big studio films. It made the action in “Ready of Not” work so well from start to finish. This is the type I like in horror films where you have intense action that keeps you interested in the film while wanting to see how it’s going to play out. It’s the most action packed horror film I’ve seen all year.

The other thing that I liked from the direction was the fact Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett does a great job directing the cast. This is a very good cast including Samara Weaving (The Babysitter, Mayhem), Adam Brody (Jennifer’s Body), Henry Czerny, (Mission Impossible, The Exorcism of Emily Roe) and Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day, Four Weddings and a Funeral). They did a great job making sure each of the cast had great chemistry as it made the intense and funny moments in the film work.

Speaking of Samara Weaving, I hope this is her big break as she is great in the lead role. She brings a level of charisma and intensity to her character that makes her character in this film feel like the lead character of “You’re Next” which is another crazy horror film that people should check out. I truly believe this film will put her in that top tier of current horror actresses as her performances in “Ready or Not”, “Mayhem”, and “The Babysitter” are great and her performances in each of those films brings something to each of those films.

The screenplay written by Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy (not the creator of American Horror Story) was very good and original. What makes this screenplay great was the fact this had an original feel to it. In an era where ideas in Hollywood horror films are rehashed almost all the time, it was nice to see a film that has an original feel and doesn’t try to become a franchise. They do a very good job balancing the horror and dark comedy aspects. It made the film fun and intense at the same time. The other thing that I liked a lot about the screenplay as it was balls to the wall action. From the beginning of the film until it batshit crazy ending, the material kept me interested and engaged. This were a lot of creativeness in the kill scenes and its intense twists. It was one of those films that makes me proud to be a horror fan.

I urge you check this film out in theaters as horror films likes this need our support so that Hollywood studios not Blumhouse can make more of this films instead of the PG-13 fare that dominates most theaters today. “Ready or Not” is an excellent horror that predicates on creative scenes and intense moments. I can say this right now “Ready of Not” will be in my top 5 horror film of 2019 as this was great horror film.
