Film Review: "The Love Witch"

Repost from my review of "The Love Witch" from 7/17 which first appeared on Film-Arcade.net as part of the site's Fantasia coverage. The film is now playing in theaters in limited release and VOD.

Lately, yours truly has been watching a lot 60’s and 70’s horror films that have had a European feel to them. When I first heard of “The Love Witch”, my first thoughts was it must be European horror film as the stills and the trailer had the look of it. But no, this was made here in America and it’s a new film that is being released here later this year. Still, the look and the trailer of the film is what drew me to “The Love Witch”.

The film is about a beautiful woman (Samantha Robinson) who moves to a new town looking for the man of her dreams. In her spare time, she lives in a gothic looking apartment and she picks up men to seduce. Soon, her love portions leave a string of dead men. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation takes a dark turn as it leads her to insanity and murder.

When the film ended, I was surprised that I enjoyed this one considering its running time and had a weird obscure vibe to it. Sometimes it can be tough to watch. Then again, I’ve been watching euro-horror films lately and this had that vibe that made me enjoy this film a lot. “The Love Witch” is film that captures the Jesus Franco/Jean Rollin vibe with the look of the film and its approach.

Most of that had to do with the directing and writing of Anna Biller. One of the things that Biller does right was to make the look of the film stand out. The look of the film had the feel of an early 60’s European horror film feel to it. Biller and her cinematographer does a great job making sure it has its unique look as it adds to the film and makes the supernatural elements work. The other thing that Biller does very well is to make sure the acting fits the film’s surreal tone. She makes sure the cast does a very good job making their characters are entertaining and interesting. The performances helped keep my interest with what was going on in the story.

Speaking about the performances, I thought Samantha Robinson’s was the best thing about this film. I liked how she makes her character so hypnotizing and charismatic as she makes the film’s main character Elaine stand out from all the other characters. It grabs your attention every time she’s on screen. It’s something that’s needed for a main character to grab your attention.

The screenplay also written by Billing was very good. I liked how she goes for originality with the way that she approaches the story. Whether it’s the way she came up with the ideas to focusing on the dark witch elements, everything had a bizarre feel of a late 60’s/early 70’s European occult film. It makes it feel original because the euro-horror approach is rarely done in U.S. horror films. The other thing that I liked was the fact that it does a great job focusing on its main character. Whether it’s the way the main character approaches her soon to be lovers to her backstory, Biller does a very good job making sure it keeps you interested in the character and the story.

I had a very good time with “The Love Witch” as it has the feel of a Jess Franco or Jean Rollin film. With its stunning cinematography and great performance from Samantha Robinson, you will fall under the spell of “The Love Witch” as it will leave you hypnotized.

“The Love Witch” will be hitting theaters in limited release in the U.S. in October.

Review Rating: Five Stars

"Trapped in the Woods" An Interview with Director Shawn Burkett

Director Shawn Burkett is a director and head of an independent film company called Concept Media LLC. He has directed such films as “The Sleeping Soul”, “Seasons Greeting” and most recently directed a segment for the horror anthology film “Theater of the Deranged 2” which was recently released by Troma. Today, he’s here to talk to about his latest film “Don’t Fuck in the Woods”, which is self-distributed by Concept Media.

Before I begin, tell my readers about yourself and what drew you to horror movie making?

SMB: My name is Shawn Burkett, I'm a 32 year old Ohioan, and the father of 2 crazy, amazing boys. I've been making horror/thriller movies for the past 5 years, and my latest film is titled "Don't Fuck In The Woods". I was raised on the Universal Monsters thanks to my grandpa, and he's part of the reason why I wanted to make movies. He showed me this amazing world of make believe that was dark, and beautiful.

I'd have to say the decision to make films was mainly the craving for a creative stimulate. I was a touring musician for many years until my oldest son was born, and I chose to become a stay at home dad. I needed a creative outlet, and then one day Ryan Stacy contacted me about Joe Bob Briggs was actively looking for scripts to option. So after a few weeks of Ryan writing this script we sat down, and I told him we should just make it ourselves. And that's how it all began lol.

How did you come up with the title?

SMB: I remember setting I’m my apartment reading posts in a forum about my film BLUDGEON. This would have been 2013, and someone was livid about the artwork and title not 100% matching the content. For some reason that stuck with me, and I knew that the next film I was gonna make would have a title that was spot on, lol. If memory serves, myself and Ayse Howard were brainstorming some ideas for a follow up to BLUDGEON, and at that point in my life there were several people telling me what I could and couldn’t do. Somehow it came out and was a joke at first, but then it kinda sank in, and had a smooth ring to it, lol.

With a title like that, I would think it would turn off some people off. Were there any disagreements with any of the producers or people within your company?

SMB: There were concerns for sure, lol. My business partner was actively against the title, actors just looked at me like "Ok, it's your funeral", and a few producers had issues with the title from a distribution standpoint. There main issue was that Walmart wouldn't put a title like that on the shelf, lol. And at that point in time Big Ass Spider came out and Walmart sold the censored version "Big-gest Spider". So I pitched that to them and that made them feel a bit better, lol.

This film to me had more of a grindhouse/creature feature vibe which made it a fun film. What was it like coming up with the film’s story?

SMB: Once I had the main setting, it was fairly easy. I say that, but there are at least 6 different versions of the script, lol. Two of them don't have the creature as a killer either, lol.

With its title and story and the fact you’re filming in the woods, I would think that it would be tough to get the right people that you would want. What was the casting process like?

SMB: I would find someone and then loose them, or the pay wasn't enough for them so they would walk. Casting was difficult, but it wasn't the hardest part of making this film. I had a lot of people reject offers, or not even look at them because of the title. It's hard to put faith in people when they aren't as close to the project as you are. And then you have to live with the fact that they might flake on you a month before your scheduled to shoot. The casting process is a constant battle, filled with stress and anxiety lol.

The film takes place almost all in the woods. What was it like filming there and were there any fun moments on the set?

SMB: I'd have to say the most fun on the set was the final showdown with the creature. We actually have bonus feature on the bluray about that night and how we went about shooting the scenes.

The cast was very good in making their characters entertaining. What was it like working with the cast and were there any favorite moments that you had during filming?

SMB: There were many new people that I hadn't worked with before. Brandy Mason, Nadia White, Kayla Morgan. I'd have to say the sex scenes were all memorable, and had the most outtakes. It's one of those things where I didn't want people to feel uncomfortable, so they all got 15 in the tent to kinda figure out what they were gonna do beforehand. My scripts are more like guidelines, lol. I'm not looking for exact lines, because I want it to seem natural. So there's lots of improv.

Another thing that I liked about this film was the gore effects as it a very graphic feel to them. What was it like filming those sequences and what was the challenges in creating them?

SMB: We spent months on FX and figuring out what would look best, and what we could afford. Total as far as FX we ended up spending about $600. Filming them was the easy part. Deryk Wehrley and his assistant Amanda Waddell were on point with all the FX and the execution of them. There were a few FX that myself, Scott Gillespie and Ryan Stacy created last minute to add a bit more to the film. Such as the creature tearing into someone, that's featured in the latest teaser trailer.

I noticed the film is being self-distributed by your company Concept Media LLC. What made you decide to go the self-distribution route compared to trying to get a distribution deal for the film?

SMB: At the moment were self distributing while talking to a few different U.S distributors as well as foreign distribution companies. I would prefer to secure foreign distribution, so I could continue selling it myself.

Finally, any other projects that you or your company have coming out in the near future that my readers should be aware about?

SMB: At the moment I’m in pre production for my next feature "BETSY" which stars Ayse Howard, Josh Miller and Joe Kidd. It's more of a story about a woman who is lost, and is looking to change her ways, but as we all know there are always obstacles in the way of what we want, but here's is a battle with something inside of her. I wish I could give more info on this project, but i don't want to give too much away.

So lets just say "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright".

Where can they find you and your company on the web and on social media?

Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month: November 2016 - Kelsey Zukowski

Welcome to the horror chamber's newest feature Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month. The goal is to focus on the women of horror in the various aspects of the genre. Whether it's on the business or entertainment side of things, this column will focus on the various avenues of horror.

She has appeared in "Axe to Grind", which started Debbie Rochon along with writting the screenplays and starring in "What They Say" with Heather Dorff (Truth or Dare, Scream Queen Stream) and most recently "Within These Walls" which was recently released by Tomcat Releasing. Her modeling work can be found on the pages of Maleviolent Magazine X-treame, Sanctuary Magazine, Gothesque Magazine and Dark Beauty Magazine. The Horror Chamber's Scream Queen of the Month for November 2016 is Kelesy Zukowski.

Age: 27

Where are you from?: Eastlake, OH

What are somethings that you like doing in your spare time?: My life pretty much revolves around stories, both through artistic expression and consumption. Horror is also a massive part of my life and identity. So when I’m not creating I like to spend time reading- I have a particular fondness for YA supernatural fiction, fantasy epics, and the occasional classic horror novel- and getting consumed in incredible television and films.

What made you get into horror acting and modeling?: The Halloween series really set it in motion, at least in making me a lifelong fan. Once I embraced horror and saw it in a new light so to speak, getting passed the fear and realizing the intoxicating fun spirit it could hold, I consumed every horror film I could get my hands on. Some of those, only spoke to me more and awakened what was always a part of me. They ignited something in me and showed what the genre was capable of: profound exploration that could surge through all your senses and resonate deeply. Sure, some are simply goofy fun and I love those too, but horror, for everything it is, it resonated me in such a deep way, that I have never been the same since. It has fueled me with this passion, understanding, and a freeing power to expose, empower, or explore; to have a unique voice in a genre that is very much misunderstood, which perhaps only inspires me more to bring it to its fullest and in a way only makes me connect to it more.

When I was in college, I was writing for a lot of film and horror websites, going to festivals, and reviewing a lot of indie horror films. Through that I started becoming friends with some directors who I shared my passion and insight with. Down the line, I started being asked to be in films and I decided acting in the horror realm was something worth seeing where it could go. There is a wonderful horror community in Chicago, which was a major factor in my growing involvement with acting and indie films. Once I did one film, I quickly immersed myself in the community and became a part of various filmmaking circles. I was lucky to be called on to collaborate and be a part of a lot of great indie films, both as an actress and writer.

Once I started acting more it was necessary for me to have images to represent my look. While the general headshots and more “normal” photos were most needed for acting, I couldn’t restrict myself from the horror, gothic, and more character-based photoshoots that were calling to me. It became a new hobby and passion to immerse myself in this form of tackling a character and story with dark, enticing material. I’ve worked with so many talented individuals whose aspirations in art align with mine and that collaboration brought this new hunger and creative need in me alive. I sort of am feeding my own self-expression and emotions in a metaphorical way, but also am letting myself go and something bigger than me comes out of it. It’s an exhilarating feeling and artistry all its own like no other. Considering I just fell in to both of these things without them being specific ambitions of mine, I am very grateful things happened the way they have.

Favorite Horror Film: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Halloween might have been my “gateway drug” in to horror, but this is the film that really ignited something in me, that inspired, horrified, and exhilarated me. I really love that this safety net of even the worst nightmares your subconscious can conjure and make you face wasn’t “just a dream”. It was perhaps more real than anything in the waking world and could lead you to your own living nightmare leading to a gruesome end. I really love psychological and surreal horror, especially that shows the overwhelmingly ability for an all-powerful monster to get inside your mind and attack all of your senses and that show the strength of the human spirit. Freddy and Nancy both play their parts to bring each side of this out beautifully.

Favorite Horror Character: Freddy Krueger. I can place great value in the mysterious unknown intrigue of a villain like Michael Myers, but there was something about Freddy that pulled me in more and forever made me a Freddy girl. I really liked the more in your face, psychotic nature he held yet still was this otherworldly monster who was once a vile, demented man whose evil forever transcended through this immortal all powerful shell. Even the sadistic comedic lines (although I do prefer the darker Freddy vs. some of his cheesier one liners) had a way of just making him seem more out of control and unhinged like he was really capable of anything. I also loved that one’s fear was like a power of Freddy’s that made him that much stronger and a part of who he was. There’s this mental and emotional, overpowering trap this lies. One cannot simply deny their emotions and once the seeds are planted and you realize it’s more than “just a dream”, its a surreal slaughter ground. Freddy has your fear and thus you completely, while still enjoying toying with you and the fun of the chase.

Favorite Horror Director: Wes Craven. Are you seeing a pattern here?  Wes Craven and Robert Englund were a total horror dream team and I really view Freddy as their creative love child. He is who he is and became so iconic because of what they created together and putting a bit of both of themselves and their vision of compelling horror in to him. I’ve always greatly admired and aspired to invoke in my own work Wes’ “fighting through the mind” brand of horror that is very much present both through Freddy being such a psychological villain and through Nancy being so “in to survival” and fighting this dream master, determined to beat him at his own game. Films like The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Last House on the Left, and The People Under the Stairs are further examples of how he tackles horror with a purpose, to expose and explore fear, to show the atrocities human kind is capable of, to allow his characters, himself, and even the audience to understand fear and evil and show them that they don’t have to be a prisoner to it.

Favorite Horror Scream Queen: Since Halloween was my gateway drug in to horror let’s go with
Jamie Lee Curtis. Although, currently I have to say Abigail Breslin is probably my favorite young horror starlet. I love how she seems to be clinging to the horror world. Especially in films like Haunter and The Final Girl, she has shown her strength in this genre. I hope she stays in it for a while and dives in to even meatier roles that push her further and give her worthy material to explore her voice in the genre.

Favorite Horror TV or Film Series: TV series- The Originals. Now technically it’s not as pure horror as something like Hannibal, Dexter, or American Horror Story is, which I do love too, but it’s a high paced and even higher emotional journey in to the world of a seemingly sociopathic monster and a supernatural war in gothic New Orleans, focusing on one of the most wonderful dysfunctional families ever who happen to be the first vampires ever created and far more powerful than most. But no one is without their weaknesses, even for an immortal death is still possible, especially when you have century’s worth of enemies out for revenge, blood, and power. The writing is so rich and constantly building to something bigger. A lot of times they are being attacked from all sides, which builds an exhilarating and terrifying tension and suspense.

The characters and what that opens up for the writing is something else that makes this show so strong and really stand out from all others. The characters have such intricate, complex, constantly intriguing layers between this fragile vulnerability they hide deep inside and this alluring, brutal monster that will gladly slaughter the entire room in the blink of an eye, especially if anyone is threatening their family. It’s interesting to see how the past thousand years and their parents deciding they were abominations that needed to be put down, has changed and damaged them differently. Yet it has given them something to fight for, making sure they are no longer vulnerable, but in a position of power, and fighting for each other. Between them we have great intellect, fierce emotion, and ruthlessness, each having their own identities, yet understanding one another as much as they sometimes are literally out for each other’s blood. They really complement each other so well as much as they clash. The complexities of these characters and how many years of stories that we have some background on, but can’t know their whole story adds to just how rich and unlimited possibilities there are with the story, not to mention outstanding character development. You would never guess the main character is capable of a sacrifice of the magnitude we just left him at. Even after being alive so long and being through so much together, the story and world that has been created around this show keeps them constantly being challenged and evolving and us with them by having connected so deeply to this dysfunctional vampire family and on this journey with them. Even if someone isn’t in to vampires, it’s just fantastic storytelling, which doesn’t shy away from brutality, but also doesn’t sacrifice story, drama, or substance for it.

Film Series- A Nightmare on Elm Street series. I think you have a pretty good idea what I love about it at this point 

Current or Upcoming Films: As you know Within These Walls, the gritty psychological paranormal feature, I wrote and star in is now available on DVD: http://amzn.to/2e8JPMK

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the film, it’s a story of coming to terms with loss, finding one’s personal strength even among being so utterly victimized and dominated, and gaining control back when all hope is lost and one is pushed almost past the point of torment and struggle the human mind, body, and spirit is intended to endure. It’s a gritty (yet not particularly gory) and often disturbing psychological and surreal paranormal film that explores the idea of lack of control being the basis of all fears, which is after all just an illusion. It focuses on one concept of there being “strength in suffering” as it means there is still fight left in you, making it impossible to truly be a victim if you don’t concede to that label and reality. Without intending to, I now realize I wrote a lot of the strongest themes in to Within These Walls of my two favorite films- A Nightmare on Elm Street and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1- in them. Like these two films, Within These Walls is very heavy on the theory that fear is the greatest weapon against you even if you have every reason to be dominated by it, and defying hopelessness, by never quitting and always fighting, allowing your spirit never to be killed, can truly be the greatest strength one can show.

I have a few other projects in the works, but still in early stages before I can really talk about them. I will be happy to share more about them in the future.

Advice for people trying to make it in the Horror Business: A lot of people will tell me they wish they could be in indie films or horror and I always tell them just to go for it. Just start looking on Craigslist for indie films needing cast or crew or even to collaborate with someone and make it happen yourself. The more sets you work on and people you work with, the more opportunities will open up. You have to really love it and have this drive and essential need that is as much a part of you as breathing, but if you have that, there is never any question on whether it’s worth it. There are enough other people out there looking to create and needing the right people to understand and believe in their vision. It’s still incredibly hard, but you can start getting involved and creating art together. Never forget the passion or what made you identify with the genre and aspire to be involved in it, make the type of films that really ignited that love in you. Even if the meaning or concept escapes others, just make content that you can look back on and be proud of. That is honestly worth more than anything.

Review: "Don't Fuck in the Woods"

I’ve seen many horror films with weird titles over the years. Titles like “Pink Eye” “There’s Nothing Out There” and most recently “Bed of the Dead. Nothing compares to the film I’m reviewing here today “Don’t Fuck in the Woods”. Yes, I said “Don’t Fuck in the Woods”. This might be weirdest and most ballsy title that I've ever seen. With a title like that, I had to check this film out.

The film is about a woman (Brittney Blanton) and her girlfriend (Ayse Howard)  who go on a camping trip with their after the rigors of final exams. They go into the woods for some fun and relaxation. Unbeknownst to them, someone or something is stalking the group and it’s out for blood. Can they find their way out of the woods before it’s too late?

Going into “Don’t Fuck in the Woods”, I was going into the film thinking that this would be more of a slasher film. But it wasn’t that as this feel more of a grindhouse/creature feature film. Still, this was one hell of a time as I was into this film from start to finish.

Writer/director Shawn Burkett does a very good job making sure the film moves at a good pace. Whether it’s the way that he directs the dialogue scenes to handling the film’s action and gore effects, everything is done in a way that it keeps you interested and entertained. The other thing that I liked about it was the fact that he makes sure his cast does a very good job making their characters entertaining. Films like this usually tends to have an annoying character or two due to either direction. This film doesn’t as Burkett does a good job making sure the performances are good enough to make you interested in the story and the characters.

Burkett’s screenplay does a good job making sure that the screenplay is entertaining throughout. I liked the way he blends in various grindhouse elements along with elements from various creature features films from the past. It helped make the story and action entertaining. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the way the characters were interesting. Burkett does a very good job making sure the dialogue is good enough that it keeps you interested. It helped me become interested with this film as the characters were likable and made me more interested in the action especially towards the end.

This is definitely a film that you should check out if you’re a fan of the B movie creature feature variety. “Don’t Fuck in the Woods” will make you think twice before into the woods as this was pure fun from start to finish.

Press Release:

Kickstarter: ‘Escape from Jesus Island’ comic book campaign more than a third funded on first day

Christ has returned. A lot.

That was the message from Wisdumb Productions on Kickstarter as they released their campaign for the Apocalyptic comic book series, Escape From Jesus Island on Halloween. Less than a day later, they had already broken the 30% mark and were well on their way to making this trade paperback a reality.

Escape From Jesus Island is a creator-owned, digitally painted comic book series about an attempt to clone the savior that goes badly off the rails. ReGen Corporation eventually succeeds in its quest, but only after creating scores of hideously deformed near-Jesus freaks and a monstrous twin brother, Yeshua. When the Pope learns of Christ’s return and sends an elite Vatican Black Ops extraction team to ReGen’s remote island testing facility, all Hell breaks loose.

Written by filmmaker and video-game writer Shawn French (“The Wrong House,” “Epic Tavern”), illustrated by Mortimer Glum (“Cthulhu Williams”), and edited/lettered by Shawn M. Greenleaf (“Oathbound, “Astropunk”), Escape From Jesus Island is a twisted retelling of the prophecies from the Book of Revelation.

“Bringing the fans into our story, literally, has always been the key for us,” said French. “In our first four issues, 47 fans have already appeared as characters. Nearly every character in our book is modeled after one of the diehard horror freaks who made our series possible.”

Six new fans were added to the cast in the first day of the campaign, in roles including ReGen Corp guards and their Hit Squad Commander, and even an electrocuted mutant freak.

Twenty-eight roles are still up for grabs, ranging from dying a horrible death in the story to two major, recurring roles as the Antichrist’s most trusted Mutant Apostles (rewards that includes a metal gaming miniature of your character).

“One of the centerpiece rewards in our campaign comes courtesy of the FX artists at The Shoggoth Assembly,” French said. “We’re creating a flesh-bound bible, made from stitching together assorted pieces of super-realistic and creepy silicone flesh and assorted body parts. Every book will be a unique creation and two of these horrific collector’s items were snatched up on the first day.”

“The Jesus Island team is obviously thrilled about the support we’ve received right out of the gate from our fans and the Kickstarter community,” French said. “I’ve been obsessed with this story since first writing it back in 1994. To be able to hold our first four issues in a single trade paperback will be a dream come true.”
