"Axe to Grind" Review

“Axe to Grind” is the latest film from director Matt Zettell, who’s last two films were both the shocking “The Cellar Door” and the entertaining “Resurrection County”. The film also stars Debbie Rochon, who has been a favorite of mine since seeing in films like “Terror Firmer” and “Tromeo and Juliet”. This made this film an easy must watch.

The film is about B horror movie legend Debbie Wilkins (Debbie Rochon) who is having relationship problems with her lover who also produces her films. Her world and her relationship stars to go downhill as she’s being replaced by a young scream queen. To make matters worse for Debbie, that same scream queen steals her role. Not willing to back down, she shows up on set to get rid all the cast and crew who have ruined her relationship and her career. Can anyone escape her wrath.

This film wasn’t “The Cellar Door” or “Resurrection County” but “Axe to Grind” was an entertaining film. One of thing that I liked about this film was Matt Zettell’s direction. He makes sure the direction moves at a good pace. Whether it’s the way that he films the death scenes to how some of the scenes were filmed, it brought out the blood and kept my interest in the story throughout. The other thing that Zettell does very well was to make sure the performances were good. I know that some of it felt like the stereotypical things that you see in a b-movie, but it works very well with what this film is trying to achieve. He also gets a very good performance from its lead Debbie Rochon, which also helps bolster this film.

The screenplay written by Scott C Sanford was good. One of the things that I liked about it was that it does a good job focusing on its main character. It made the character very interesting as it had some backstory about here along with why she’s going insane. This made everything in the story interesting as it kept my interest. The other thing that I liked was the fact that it wasn’t as predictable as I thought it was going to be. I literally thought the story was going to go one way with everything going one but I liked the turn this story takes towards the end. It made the film entertaining as it gave a level of shock value that you don’t see in most slasher film and it didn’t feel predictable like I thought it was going to be.

This film isn’t going to win any awards but I enjoyed this film. “Axe to Grind” is a film delivers on the blood and direction.
